FOLDING TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented 25 1921 Application filed November 24, 1919. Serial No. 340,101.
. To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EVAN M. DAVIES, a
citizen of the United States, residing at It is the object of this invention to pro-' vide a table which possesses these requirements and which can be manufactured at comparatively low cost.
In the accompanying drawings: 7
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my im proved folding table. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the same. View of the same. Fig. 4: is an end view of the table top in its folded condition. Fig. 5
is a fragmentary vertical transverse section,
on an enlarged scale, taken on line 5-5, Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a horizontal section taken on line 6-6, Fig. 5, looking upwardly and omitting the table top. Fig. 7 is a f 'agmentary vertical section taken on line 7&7, Fig. 5. Figs. 8 and 9 are fragmentary vertical sections taken on the correspondingly numbered lines in Fig. 3.
Similar characters of reference indicatecorresponding parts throughout the several views. V
The table top in its preferred form comprises two leaves or sections 10, 10, which are constructed of beaver board or similar strong, light and thin material which takes up little space. Thetop sections are pivotally connected at their opposing longitudinal edges by hinges 11 or other means, so that the same may be unfolded into a position in which the leaves or sections are in the same horizontal plane, as shown in Figs. 1.8, orthe same may be folded together with their undersides opposing each other, as shown in Fig. 4.
For the purpose of strengthening or stiffening these top sections, each of the same is provided on its underside adjacent to its outer longitudinal edge with a longitudinal cleat 1.2 which is of channel or U-shaped form in cross section and secured to the top by means of rivets 13 passing through the top and the web or body of the elect, as
Fig. 3 is an end shown in Figs. 25. The cleat on one of these table tops is preferably arranged a different distance from the pivotal connection between the top sections than the cleat on the other top section, so as to permit these cleats to clear and pass each other when folding the table top, as shown in Fig. 4, and thus enable the part to be arranged more compactly at this time.
14, let, represent two bolsters or cross pieces which are detachably secured to the underside of the table top sections adjacent to opposite ends of the same when they are unfolded and serve as part of the means for supportingthe top when the table is to be used. Each of these bolsters is preferably constructed of an angle iron which has a horizontal flange 15 engaging with the underside of the top sections and a vertical flange 16 depending from the outer edge, of
tachably securing the bolsters to the top sections may be varied but'this is preferably accomplished by providing the top sections at their corresponding ends with pairs of buttons 17, each pair projecting downwardly through a pair of vertical openings 18 in the horizontal flanges of one of the bolsters, and a pair of catches or hooks 19 pivoted on the underside of said horizontal flange by rivets 20 or otherwise, and detachably engaging their beaks 21 with the respective buttons on a line below the hori: zontal flange of the bolster. Each of the buttons may be variously constructed, but as shown in Fig. 7,,the same preferably comprises a screw 22 arranged in an opening in the table top and bearing with its'head against the upper side of the table top, a washer 2i arranged on this screw and engag ing with the undersideof the table, and an internally threaded screw sleeve 23 engaging with the lower end of said screw and provided at its lower end with an annular flange 25. lVhen the beak of a catch engages with the'oontracted neck formed by the sleeve 23 it is held thereon by the washer 2d and flange against displacement lengthwise of the button and holds the parts in an assembled position. The buttons 17 on one leaf or section of the table top are preferably arranged out of line from the corresponding buttons on the other top section when the top sections are folded, thereby avoiding interference between the same, as shown in Fig. 4.
the horizontal flange. The means for de- Underneath each of the bolsters is arranged a pair of legs 26, 27 which in their site endsengaging the outer sides or" said legs. On of the legs, say the 26, of

end to the vertical'tlange of the respective bolster adjacent to one end thereof by means of a rivet 30, so that this leg and the bolster can be folded and unfolded. The other l g of each pair is detachably connected with the other end'of the bolster preferably by providing this leg with a headed screw or button 31 which projects through a hori zontal opening 32 in the vertical fian e of the respective bolsterand a catch or'nook 33 pivoted at one 'endbya rivet to the leg 27 and engaging its beak'35 with this button, said leg and catchengaging with opposite sides of the vertical fian e. of the bolster when the parts are assembied; r In order to insure stability oi the table, means are provided for connecting the two pairs of legs with each other, which means comprise a longitudinal reach 36 and a pair of diagonal braces '37. The reach'is p erably' constructed in the form of an iron as shown in Fig. 9.
rod and the same has its externally screw threaded ends arranged in the thiinbles 28 of both pairs of legs and secured thereto by inner and outer screw nuts 38', 39 arranged on each end ofthe reach and engaging with the inner and outer sides of a pair of legs, The two braces prei:' erably cross each other lengthwise of the tableand each is constructed of an iron rod; The ends 40 of each brace rod are arranged horizontally and secured in horizontal. open ings, d1 formed in corresponding legs of both pairs by means of inner and outer screw nuts 42, d3 applied to each end of a braceand engaging with the inner and outer sides of the respective leg, as shown in Fig.
8. "When the braces are in place one end of;
each brace is connected with the upper end of one leg of one pa1r wh ch supports one end of the top while the opposite end of this brace is connected with the lower end 01"" a leg of the pair which supports the other end of the top. By this means the legs are detachably connected with each other and with the top which permits the table to be quickly set up for use or knocked down and folded compactly i or storage or transportation. When set up the table is very strong and able to sustain the weight of such articles'which are likely to be placed upon the same.
- I claim as my invention: 7
'1. A foldin'gtable comprising a top, bolsters each having horizontal and vertical flanges and engaging its horizontal flange with the underside of said top and provided with'vertical openings, buttons arranged on the underside of said top and projecting downwardlythrough said openings, horie zontally swinging catches mounted on said bolsters and engaging with said buttons, and
legs connected with the vertical flange of each of said bolsters. V
2. A folding table comprising a top, a
plurality of bolsters each having horizontal and vertical flanges the horizontal flanges being detachably secured to the underside of respective bolster, and a vertically swinging catch mounted on the leg having the button and arranged on the opposite side of said bolster and engaging with the button on the leg which carries the respective catch.
I '3; A folding table comprising a" top bolstersdetachably mounted on the underside ofsaid top, a plurality of pairs oflegs, each pair crossing each other with their central parts and having their upper ends movably connected with one of said bolsters, flanged thimbles pivotally c l nuecting the crossed parts of each pair of legs with each and provided with screw nutsengaging with opposite sides of said thnnbles'.
