GUARD FOR TELEPHONES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 488,385, dated December 20, 1892.

Application filed July 30, 1892. Serial No. 441,671. (No model.)

To atZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD B. CHASE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Guards for Telephones, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.

My invention consists of a guard for a telephone formed of a cap or sheath which incloses the binding screws and ends of the Wires connected therewith, or other exposed parts adjacent thereto, thus preventing the hand from contacting with the same, and avoiding dangers incident to the handling of telephones.

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a telephone guard embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a section of a portion thereof, on line :1, m, Fig. 1.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.

Referring to the drawings: A designates a telephone of well known form and construction.

B designates a cap or sheath which is adapted to embrace the end of the telephone where the binding screws and ends of the wires are located and thoroughly inclose said screws and wire-ends. The cap is made in sections, so as to be readily applied to the telephone, and it is provided with screws C, which are fitted in eyes D of one section and engage with eyes E of the other section, whereby the sections may be held together and tightened upon the telephone, so as to be prevented from displacement. The inner end of the guard is contracted so that it cannot slip over the end flange of the telephone, and the side of the cap is formed with slots F, to admit of the passage of the cap over the wires, and the walls of the inner ends of said slots have thereon the bosses G, which project from the cap so as to cover the portions of the wires just outside of the slots F, so that the hand cannot come into contact with the wire, and as the binding screws and ends of the wire connected therewith are i'nclosed by the cap, it is evident that the telephone may be handled with safety while subjected to danger incident to such device.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:-

1. A cap formed in sections adapted to sheath the end of a telephone, and means for securing said sections together, said sections having slots in their sides for the passage of the wires, said parts being combined substantially as described.

2. A cap adapted to sheath the end of a telephone, the sarne being formed in sections and provided with a screw for connecting the sec tions and retaining them on the telephone, substantially as described.

3. A cap adapted to sheath the end of a telephone and to be secured thereto, and provided with slots for the wires and projecting bosses on the inner ends of said slots, substantially as described.

4:. A cap adapted to sheath the end of a telephone and provided with means for holding the same thereon and having slots for the wires and projecting bosses on the inner ends of said slots, said parts being combined substantially as described.

5. A sectional cap havinga contracted inner end, and provided with slots for the wires, said slots having projecting bosses on their inner ends, substantially as described.
