SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 488,332, dated December 20, 1892. Application filed April 27, 1892. Serial No. 430,834. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM FLAI/IM, aeitizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Oolorado, have invented a new and useful Sofa, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to sofa beds, and consists of an improvement on Patent No. 457,580, granted to me August 11, 1891.

The essential features of thisimprovement will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.

The object of the invention is to simplify the construction and arrangement of parts in such manner as to render the device less eX- pensive in manufacture and still sustain an equal efficiency.

In the drawings-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sofa bed arranged as a sofa and embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a similar View of the device arranged as a bed. Fig. 3 is a plan view of a sofa bed with the bottom thereof removed. Fig. 4 is a section on the line -zr, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view showing a modified form of construction. Fig. G is a section on the line g/-y of Fig. 5.

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.

Referring to the draw'ings,and to the device especially as shown by Figs. 1, 2, 8, and 4, the numeral 1 designates a rectangular frame, supported by corner legs 2 and having hollow semi-circular arms 3, 3, provided with suitable hinged covers 1t and upper curved sides which are upholstered as shown. These arms 3, 3, are hinged to opposite ends of the frame 1, and adapted to be folded outwardly when the bed is made, or folded inwardly when the device is arranged as a sofa. The said arms may be employed as receptacles for the storage of bedclothes as will be readily understood.

The numeral 5 designates the back of the sofa or the bottom of the bed. It comprises a frame carryinga wire spring mattress or in which is stretched webbing upholstered on both sides. In the Linder faces of the end bars or to the outer edges of the saine are pivotally connected metallic arms or plates 6, the opposite ends of which extend into slots 7 in the ends of theframe 1 and are in like manner pivotally secured. The said arms or plates are connected to the said sofa back or bottom of the bed 5, near the rear side thereof and are made sufliciently long to permit said parts 6 to be properly adjusted when the device is arranged as a bed.

Two bars or strips 8 have ends thereof hinged to the under side of the front portion of the sofa frame work 1, and extend across the width of the same with theiropposite ends unconnected or free to move. These bars or plates 8 are connected by a cross strip 9, and to the ends of the same are attached ropes or chains 10 which pass upward through slots 11 in the rear portion of the frame Work 1 over sheaves or pulleys 12 located therein, with their outer ends secured to the lower part ot the construction 5 forming the back of the sofa or bottom of the bed. A treadle 13 is secured at its rear end through the rear partof the frame work l by a hinge 14:, and byalink l5 to the cross strip 9 connected to the bars or strips 8. This treadle extends far enough toward the front of the frame 1 as to bein position for ready engagement by the foot of the operator.

The frame work 1 is so constructed as to receive a proper cushion or upholstering 16, and in the ends of the same are formed slots or holes 17 to receive pins 18 carried by the arms 3, to thereby hold the arms against too easy disengagement when arranged to form a part of t-he sofa and folded inwardly as shown in Fig. l.

Vhen it is desired to convert the device from the sofa shown in Fig. 1 to the bed shown in Fig. 2, the arms 3 are first turned outwardly, the operator presses his foot on the treadle 13 and bears downward thereon with sulficient force as to pull the strips 8 and cross connecting strip 9 of the same downward therewith. This draws on the ropes or chains 10 and elevates the part 5 so that it can be turned over on the frame work 1 in the form of a bed. The said part 5 being either the back of the sofa or bottom of the bed, is provided with a leaf 19, hinged to the rear of the back and adapted to be used as a pillow, and may be supported when elevated by any suitable or'preferred means. The rear of said part 5 is formed with a flange or strip 19 arranged at right angles thereto and acts as a IOO shield against the back of the frame 1 to assist in sustaining the said part 5 in proper position. It will be observed in this instance that the legs 2 set inward from the side rails or strips of the frame l, and thereby the lower end or edge of the combined back and bed would be free to have a rocking movement when arranged as a back and pressure was brought to bear on the upper part thereof if the lower Flange 19 were not employed, the latter contacting with the outer lower portions of the rear legs 2 and thereby holding the combined bed and back in stable position when arranged as aback and as clearly shown in Fig. 4. To restore the device to the form of a sofa, the said part 5, after having been relieved ot' the bed clothing, is pushed to the rear of the frame work 1, when it will drop into position by the arms 3 which are turned over as shown in Fig. 1.

In Figs. 5 and 6 a modified form of construction is shown and consists in securing additional sheaves or pulleys 2O in the front part of the frame work l, and the ropes or chains 10 are extended over from the pulleys or sheaves 12 and pass over the said sheaves or pulleys 20 so that the ends thereof depend under the front portion of the frame work 1 and are secured to a stirrup21 by which they may be operated in a manner similar to the construction hereinbefore set forth. This form of the device materially simplifies the construction and arrangement ot' the parts as will be readily seen and understood.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- In a combined sofa and bed, the combination of an upholstered frame having hinged end-arms forming containing receptacles, and an end hinged pillow or rest adapted to be elevated, said frame having legs inward from the edges thereof to provide for proper positioning of the side-bars containing the operating mechanism, and a combined back and bed hin gedly connected to the aforesaid frame by plates 6 mounted in slots and connected at their inner ends at adistance from the rear edge of the said frame, said combined back and bed being formed with a right-angular flange 19X extendinglongitudinally the length thereof and adapted to bear against the legs at the back of the frame to hold the said combined backv and bed in a stable position when arranged as a sofa-back, and to prevent movement over the upholstered frame beyond a certain point when arranged as a bed, and operating cords attached to the said combined back and bed adjacent to the opposite ends thereof and at the lower edge of the same, whereby it may be raised and thrown over the upholstered frame to form a bed, said combined back and bed being similarly upholstered and supplied with springs on the front and rear sides thereof, substantially as described.
