PUMP ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 488,183, dated. December 20, 1892.
Application filed April 22, 1892. Serial No. 430,242. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, ALBERT B. CLANGY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Olivia, in the county of Renville and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Pump Attachment, of which the following is a specification.
This invent ion relates to pump attachments; and it has for its object to provide an improved pipe elbow and pump rod attachment combined, which provides means whereby the conducting pipe of the pump may be turned in a number of directions so as to lead the same to any desired distance from the well for a convenient discharge of the water, while at the same time providing means for an uninterrupted flow of the water through the pipe from the well to the pump, and also for continously connecting the pump rod running through the line of pipe so that the pump proper within the well can be easily operated from a distance.
To this end it is the main object of thisin- Vention to provide improvements in combined pipe elbows and pump rod connectors.
WVith these and many other objects in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings;Figure 1 isaside elevation of a pump andline of piping connected together in the manner contemplated by this invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail sectional view of one of the connecting elbow boxes. Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective of the pump rod connecting lever. Fig. 4 is a detail cross section of one of the connecting elbow boxes.
Referring to the accompanying drawings: A represents a well within which is suspended the ordinary pump cylinder B, to which is connected the conducting pipe 0, which is led to any desired distance from the Well to the surface pump D provided with the usual operating mechanism for operating the pump or piston rod E in the usual manner. The line of piping 0,111 leading to the surface pump D, necessarily turns at right angles at several points and without special means would not allow the pump rod to pass around the several corners and operate the piston within the cylinder 13. To overcome this difficulty and to allow for a free discharge of the water through the pipes I employ the improved elbow boxes F, connecting the discharge piping 0 together at the corners where the same takes a right angularly turn. The said elbow boxes F comprise hollow castings which are inclosed by the removable cap plates G, suitably bolted thereon and are constructed in a quadrant or quarter circle shape, and are provided with the opposite threaded openings II which receive the threaded ends of the conducting pipe sections 0, at the elbow joint, so as to provide for a continuous flow of the water from one section of pipe through the elbow box thence through the other section of pipe connected with said box. As stated the boxes are constructed in a quadrant shape so as to make the rightangular joint, and are provided in the opposite sides thereof or at leastin one side and on said cap G and at the center corner ofthe quadrant, with the integral circular hearing flanges I, which receive the integral journal ends or lugs J of the T-shaped or angle pump rod lever K,Which lugs project from opposite sides and. at the end of the tail of the lever. The said pump rod lever K is thus pivotally mounted in the center corner of the quadrant box being clamped in its pivotal position by cap G and is provided with a curved are head L corresponding to the curvature of the arc of the box and having connected to opposite ends thereof the ends of the pump rod sections E, which work through each section of the conducting pipes and are connected at their corners with said levers. Means are thus provided whereby as the pump rod is operated from the surface pump D by means of the swinging connecting levers K, each section of the pump rod is put in operation so as to easily operate the piston in the pump cylinder D in the well, while at the same time allowing a free and uninterrupted flow of water through the pipes.
As will be seen by reference to Fig. 2 the exterior quadrant-shaped casing G is provided with perforated securing clips at projecting radially from the edge thereof and in alignment with the opposite accompanying casing, whereby the two parts may be securely held together by bolts (not shown) in an air and water tight manner, yet at thesame time can be readily opened for interior corrections or repairs. Referring to Fig. 4 the T-lever K has its projecting boss or journal J formed integral therewith and the same is swiveled or journaled in a corresponding journal hearing formed in the adjacent casing G by its circular bearing lug'i projecting interiorly and also formed integral with its casing G. Thus it will be seen that by the simplicity and solidity of the construction any possible derangement of the parts are precluded and furthermore the device is rendered all the more durable and operative.
The operation and many advantages of the herein described pump attachment are thought to be apparent without further description.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1sthe quadrant shaped elbow casing comprising a hollow box-casting and a cap removably in- In a pump attachment, the combination of closing the casting, said elbow casing having opposite threaded openings at its end corners, and inwardly proj ectin g integral circular bearing flanges at the center corner of the quadrant, an oscillating T-shaped lever formed in one piece and having an arc-head and integral journal lugs projecting from opposite sides and at the end of the tail of the lever, said lugs being received by the circular bearing flanges of the casing clamped thereover to hold the lever in position, conducting pipe section threaded into the openings of said casing, and the pump rod sections working through said pipe sections and pivotally connected at their ends within. the elbow casing to opposite ends of the arc head of said lever, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT B. OLANOY. Witnesses:
WM. P. CHRISTENSEN, T. F. MILLS.
