Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 6, 1914. Serial No. 836,782.
Pumps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to pumps, and has for its object to provide a device of such class, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, for lifting water to various levels for use for any purposes desired.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a pump which is comparatively simple in its construction, operated in a convenient manner, readily set up, strong, durable, eflicient in its use, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
WVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claim hereunto appended. In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pump in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation illustrating the adaptation of the pump with respect to a water storage receptacle and with respect to adischarging nozzle, Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of a pump, and Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional View taken at right angles to Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 5 denotes a reservoir provided with a body of water 6 and said reservoir 5 is closed by a cover 7 having a centrally disposed opening 8. Arranged within the reservoir 5. is a support 9 for the pump, which is referred to generally by the reference character 10. The pump 10 has apertured ears 11 for the purpose of securing said pump 10 to the support 9.
The pump includes a casing 12, open at one side and the said open side is closed through the medium of a closure plate 13. The casing 12 is provided with socket formlng members 14, against which abut apertured cars 15, through which extend holdfast devices 16 for detachably connecting the plate 13 in position.
The closed side of the casing 12 is formed wlth a centrally disposed opening 17 and further provided with an outwardly proectlng bearing 18. The plate '13 is provided centrally with an opening 19 and w1th an outwardly projecting collar 20, and is provided with peripheral threads. Arranged within the casing 13 is a shaft 21, having each end reduced as at 22, 23. The reduced end 22 is of less diameter than thereduced end 23 and the said reducedend 23 is journaled in the opening .17 and bearlng 18. The reduced end 23 projects through the opening 19 and collar 20, andhas its free terminus squared as at 24:. Surrounding the reduced end 23 is a packing 25, which is maintained in position by a packing gland 26. Fixed upon the squared terminus of the reduced end 23 is a crank arm 27, formed with a longitudinally ex tending slot 28. The casing 12 is provided with an integral V-shaped web and the arms of the latter are indicated at 29, 30 and the apex at 31, the latter being cut away to provide a bearing surface 32. Each of the arms 29 and 30 is formed with an opening 32* and the said arms 29, 30 in connection with said casing 12 and plate 13 provide an outlet chamber 33.
The inner face of the casing 12, at the bottom thereof is formed with an integral enlargement 34 provided with a segmentshaped passage 35. Formed integral with the enlargement 34, centrally thereof, is a web 36, which is positioned in a plane to intersect centrally the V-shaped web. The free end of the packing gland 26 is spaced from the aperture of the V-shaped web and is rounded as at 37 to provide a bearing surface.
The shaft 21 rides against the bearing surfaces 32 and 37. and has formed integral therewith a pair of oppositelv disposed piston members 38, 39. the latter extends between one side of the enlargement 34 and the arm 30. and the former extends between the other side of the enlargement 34 and the arm 29. The piston members 38 and 39 travel against the inner face of the casing 12 and the member 38 in connection with the arm 30 provides a pumping chamber 40. and the member 39 in connection with the arm Patented Oct. 10, 1916.
28 provides a pumping chamber 41. The end 42 of the passage 35' opens into the inlet chamber 41, and the end 43 of the passage 35 opens into the pumping chamber 40. The member 38 as well as the member 39 is provided with a pumping opening and the pumping opening for the chamber 40 is indicated at 44 and the pumping opening for the chamber 41 is indicated at 45. The openings 33 are outlets for the chambers 40 and 41.
Pivotally connected to the member 3 8, as at 46, is a flap valve 47 for closing the inlet 44 and pivotally connected to the member 39, as at 48, is a flap valve 49 for closing the inlets 45. Pivotally connected as at 50 and 51, to the enlargement 34, are oppositely disposed flap valves52 and 53 respectively for alternately closing the ends 42 and 43 of the passage 35. the casing 12 and depending therefrom is an inlet nipple 54, which Opens into the passage 35 centrally thereof, and has connected thereto a depending pipe 55, which extends into the body of water 6 and has a screened lower end 56; The pipe is termed an inlet pipe. Arranged within the outlet chamber 33 is a butterfly valve 57 for alternately closing the openings 32, and communicating with said outlet chamber 33 is an outlet 58 arranged in alinement with a discharge nipple 59, which is connected to a service pipe 60. Communicatingwith the discharge nipple 59 are oppositely disposed drain passages 61, having outlets 62. The service pipe 60 extends up through the opening 8, and is provided with a valve 63 and a nozzle 64. Communicating with the service pipe ably connected by the pin 74 to the crank 27.

What I claim is A pump comprising a casing provided with a discharge chamber having a pair of outlets, a butterfly valve within said chamher for alternately closing said outlets, a pair of pumping chambers, valve piston members operating in opposite directions for alternately forcingwater in one of said pumping chambers into said discharge chamber, valve means for alternately controlling the supply of water to said pumping chambers, means for establishing com- ,munication between said casing and a water supply, an oscillatory shaftfor operating said piston members, an arm pivoted to a service pipe and secured to said oscillatory shaft to operate" the same, oppositely disposed drain passages surrounding the periphery of said pump chamber and means for conducting the water from said discharge chamber.
