Description

(No Model.) 7 0. BROPHY.
GLEARER ROLL FOR DRAWING FRAMES- No 487,693. Patented Dec. 6, 1892.
w I I [Me/Jar m zww 0W6 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OWEN BROPHY, OF NEW BEDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- THIRD TO JOHN J. ROONEY, OF SAME PLACE.
CLEARER-RO LL FOR DRAWlNG-FRAM ES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,693, dated December 6, 1892.
Application filed September 18, 1891. Renewed September 3,1892. Serial No. 445,016. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OWEN BROPHY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Bedford, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clearer,- Rolls for Drawing-Frames, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of devices which are designed to keep the top rolls in drawing-frames free from fly and dirt; and its object is to provide means whereby the clearer-rolls may be adjusted to or from each other in order to accommodate themselves to a greater or less distance between the drawing-rolls, or to be adj ustedwith reference to the top rolls, on which they rest.
To this end my invention consists in providing the journals of the clearing-rolls with adjustable bearings, whereby each cl carer-roll may be adjusted independently of the other.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention, in which Figure 1 represents an end view of the drawing-frame, clearingrolls, and the cap, to which the clearing-rolls are hung, of a drawingframe, showing the clearing-rolls adjusted over the center of the top rolls. Fig. 2 represents an end view of the same, showing the clearerrolls adjusted to one side of the center of the top rolls. Fig. 3 represents a view in perspective of one of the hearings in which the clearer-rolls are journaled; and Fig. 4 represents a plan view of the cap, in which the clearer-rolls are adjustably hung.
Similar letters referto similar parts throughout the several views.
a a represent the fluted rolls of a drawingframe. I) I) represent the top or leather-covered rolls of the same, and c 0 represent the clearer-rolls of the same, covered with flannel and journaled in the adjustable bearings d.
f represents the cap, which is provided w1th. the slots is k.
The bearings d d are secured to the cap f by bolts e e passing through the holes Z and the slots k, and are provided with slots h, in which the clearer-rolls c c are journaled that they may have a free vertical movement when their diameter is increased by accumulations of fly and dirt.
When the distance between the drawingrolls is increased or diminished in order to attain certain results by means of the adj ustable bearings d d, the clearer-rolls may be adjusted correspondingly.
When from any cause the clearer-rolls when adj usted over the center of the top rolls fail to lap up the fly and dirt from the top rolls, the clearer-rolls may be adjusted to one side of the center of the top rolls, as shown in Fig. 2, in order that there may be more or less of a rubbing motion between them-that is to say, that the top rolls may slip somewhat on the surface of the clearer-rolls and thus rub off any fly or dirt that adheres to the top rolls.
The cap fis hinged at g, so that it may be thrown back and the dirt and fly removed from the clearer-rolls when the accumulations become too great.
I claim- In combination with the rolls a a and b b of a drawing-frame, the clearer-rolls c c, having bearings d d, provided with slots 71. and holes Z, adapted to be secured to the cap f by bolts e, and the cap f, provided with slots is, as shown, and for the purpose described.
