Description
UNITED VSTATES `PATENT OFFICE.-
ANDREl/V J. GOVE, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND WM. GERARD, OF NEW YORK CITY.
IMPROVED MAST-COAT.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANDREW J. GovE, of the city and county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Mast-Coat and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, andto the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention is the providing masts of ships at their intersection with the upper deck with what is called a mast-coat,77 made of materials much more durable than the common mast-coat of canvass.
Figure l is a side view. Fig. 2 is a plan. Fig. 3 is a sectional view..
A represents a portion of a mast of a ship or othervessel; D, the deck-planks; E, a shield, of brass, copper, or other metal, having a flange, F. G G are rings,of gutta-percha,can vas, or other suitable material, conned at their outer edges to the shield E and deck D, ref spectively, by the rings of metal S S', and fastened together at their inner edges between the metal rings S" S, somewhat after the manner of a pair of bellows. The shield E may either be in one piece or made in sections.
The advantages of my invention over the common canvas mast-coat are as follows: The metallic shield protects the mast coat from injury, and is not liable itself to be injured. The pliable joints formed by the rings G G allow for the constant working ofthe mast. It is much more Water-tight than the common coat;
consequently would prove a great saving to marine-insurance companies on account of less damage to cargoes. It is less likely to get out of order, and can be quickly put on in case of repairs. It is much more substantial, and in the end much more economical.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and for which I desire Letters Patent to issue, is as follows:
The metallic shield E and the exible joint formed by the rings Gr G', or their equivalent, attached to the shield and the deck, respectively, by the metallic rings S S', also attached to each other by the rings S S, or in any other suitable manner, substantially as described, and for the uses and purposes as hereinbei'ore set forth.
kANDREW J. GoVE.
