' Be it known that 1, VICTOR CAMPOSFZL subect' of the King of Spam. and a resident of the cit of New York borou h oi lVlanhat y 7 or tan, in the county and State of New Yorln have invented a new and Improved Divers Suit, of which the following is a full, clean, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide-a new and improved divers suit arran ed to relieve the diver of pressure and to allow the diver to descend to a considerable depth.
Another object is to prevent leakage at the similar characters of reference indie-ate core responding-parts in all theviews.
joints even when the suit is subjected to heavy pressure on the diver descending to a considerable depth. Another object is to enable thediver to readily move the arms and legs and to do submarine Work to practically' any depth.
With these and of construction as hereinafter; shown and de- ;scribed, and thenspecifically pointed out in is represented in the accompanying drawings,
forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the divers suit with one-half portion shown in section; Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional plan View of one of the gripping devices, the section being on theline 22 of Figure 1 and Figure 8 is an enlarged sectional elevation of one of the leak proof joints.
The divers suit is made o J a non-flexible pressure resisting :i'naterial such as heavy sheet steel and the like, and the suit is adapted to wholly encase the diver so that the water pressure has no effect on the encased diver. The divers suit in its general construction comprises a tubular body 10 on the top of which is detachably fastened a helmet 11 by bolts 12 or other fastening devices, and the said helmet 11 is provided with windows at the front and sides to enable the diver to look out. The lower portion of the body 10 is provided with angular joints 15 extending from the crotch 16 upwardly and outwardly and each of the said joints 15 is provided with an annular recess 17 adapted to be filled with a liquid, preferably an'oil, or other suit able lubricant. Into this annular groove 17 extends an annular flange 18 formed on the other objects inview, the invention consists of certain novel features.
. on the body.
. noticed that by this joint 'construc t ion.. the pressure-of the water against the thigh -19 i s taken up by the oil .or other liquidyin the recess 17, that is. the' flange 18 bears against the liquid thus allowing easy turning of the flange 18 in the recess 17. the arrangement described the diver is enabled to i mpart f a swinging movement to thethigh19 "e'ven when submerged at a considerable depth, and without danger. of binding of .thegparts at the joint. The other joints hereinafter rejferredto arelsimilarly constructed for the same reasons. "The flange 18 of each thigh; 19 is engaged by a retai'nin curing the c orresponding joint 15 in place Thelowerend of the thigh isl provided with a joint'30, similar to tl1e -jo'int 15 and engaged y. a a ar-fla s 3 f rmed el theupper end of the lower.leg; 2, the flange The lo'wer"portion ofthe lower leg 32 1's piece 21 locked in place by ajam nut 3,6.j

Specification ofreae'rsiratent. rateirtedillp p i 7 55, j a a e byibolts 26to the body 10, the bojlts also se- '31 being held inplace-by; a retaining-ring 33 screwed onthe-lower end of the thigh A similar jam nut37 fastensthe upper end ofthe sleeve 35 in'position on the lower leg :32. Bythe arrangement describejd the lower leg can be lengthened or shortened on correspondingly screwing the sleeve 35 inf'the lower leg 32 and adjusting the foot 21 on the sleeve 35. It will be noticed that by providing articulated legs and pivotally connect ing the legs with the body the diverfis; enabled to easily move the legs. It will also be noticed that thejoints are waterproof and hence water is not liable toleak into the I divers suit especially as, the oil is used in the joints 15 and 30 to prevent leakage of the water into the suit. I
The body 10 is provided at the sides with tubular joints 10 for the'arms 4:1 to swing forwardly and backwardly. Each 'of the arms comprises a shoulder 42 in the form of an elbow, an upper arm 43 and a lower forearm 44 closed at its end by a cap 45. The
elbow 42 is provided witha flange 50 .iittinginto an annular groove. 51 formed in the joint 40 to allow the elbow to swing-forward and backward, the flange 50 being engaged by a retaining ring fastened- 1in place on the joint tObyscrews 53 which also serve to fasten'the joint 40 to the body 10.
- On the lower end of the shoulder 42 screws a joint engaged by a flange 61 formed on the upper endof the upper arm 43 and held 1n place by ,aretaining ring 62. The lower end of the upper arm 43 is provided with an angular oint 65 engaged by a flange (36 on the upper end of the forearm 414:, and the said flange 66 is held in place by a retaining ring 67 screwing on the lower end of the upper arm 43. It will be noticed that the connection between the upper arm 43 and the shoulder 42 permits turning of the 'upper arm and'by connecting the forearm 44L with the upper arm 43 by the connection described the forearm may be swung outward and upward or downward and inward.
The bottom of the cap 45 is provided with an annular groove 70in which is mounted to turn a flange 71 extending upwardly from a .crosspiiece provided with a stenr73 eX-- tending upwardly through'the bottom oithe cap. 4L5into the lower endof the arm ll. The 'upper'end of the stem 78 isprovided with a handle 'itadapted to be taken hold o f by the hand of the diver in the 'corre- I sponding arm 41.. The crosspiece 75ispiv otally connected by links'76 with gripping jaws 77 pivotally'connected with each other; 1 by links 7 8. e The flange 71 isheld in place by a retaining cap 79 screwing on=t11e cap 45. the cap 45 to fill the groove 70 with oil.
Now by the diver having hold of the handle M the latter can be turned was to swing the'gripping jaws 7'? toward orfrom each other. In swinging the gripping jaws TY froineach other into open position they can be readily engaged withan object, and on turning the handle in the opposite direction the gripping jaws 'T'Tare moved into closed A plug 80 is arranged in the bottom of position thus gripping the object. From the foregoing it will be seen that the diver can readily manipulate the gripping jaws '77" from inside of the'arm 41 thereby enabling thediver to do submarine work. p v
In order to lower or raise thediver a cable or other lowering or hoisting means is connected exteriorly 'with t-he body 10,.
and in order to supply the diver withqtresh air use is made of a hose 91 connected with the body 10 and fastened to an air pump for pumping fresh air into the divers suit. Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A divers suit oi a non-flexible pressure end spaced from the bottom otthe recess and bearing against the said liquid.
2-; A dlvers suitv oli' noh-flexible pressure resisting material having members conneeted with each other by a oint, the joint comprising two parts of which one is provided with an annular recess containing a liquid, and the other part is provided with an an- "nular flange fitting into' the said recess and bearing against the said liquid, the said flange having inner and outer packingrings,
and means holding the said flange part in position 'onthe said recessed part andthev said parts on the body o In a divers suit; a body, a limbg'and a joint for connecting the limb thereto, said joint consisting of a flanged member having an annular recess-containing a liquld, a,
flange on the member and fitting in the recess with its end spaced from the bottom, of the recess and bearing on the liquid, a retaining ring engaging the flanges ofthe limb and member, and bolts passing through the ring and-flange of the member into. the
body.
