IMPROVEMENT IN UMBRELLAS.
Specilicntion forming part of Letters Patent No. 48,267, dated June 20, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN S. FEE, of Felicity, Clermont county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Umbrellas; und I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
The object of' my improvement is lo provide an elastic and perfectly water-proof covering i'or umbrellas.
Figure l is aperspective View, and Fig. 2 is an axial section, of an umbrella covered on my plan.
A, B, G, and D represent, respectively, the statt', bows, siretchers, and thimble of an umbrella.
E represents a sheet of india-rubber, which, having been trimmed to a circular form and perforated' at its center to receive the sta, has its margin secured to the ends of the bows in any suitable manner.
Amongthe many obvious advantages of this invention the following may be citecl: The eX- tensibility of the material enables itto `tit the frame perfectly although the covering consists of a single piece. It is Water-proof in the heaviest showers. It is adapted for use as a most efficient life-preserver by persons in danger ot' drowning. I l
Although here described in connection with umbrellas, for which it is more particularly intended, yet the invention is also applicable to parasols and sun-shades.
I claim herein as new and of my invention- An umbrella Whose web or covering is composed ot' a' single piece of india-rubber, substantially as set forth.
