A eww m.
UNITED STATES PATENT GEEICE.
GAYLORD STURT HUNTER, OF PAVTUCKET, RHODE ISLAND.
BALL-COCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,671, dated December 6, 1892.
Application filed April 20I 1892.
T0 @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GAYLORD STURT HUN- TER, of Pawtucket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and Improved Ball-Cock, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in hydraulic safety-valves, such as are used for automatically shutting off the supply of a tank of any kind; and its object is to produce a simple and efcient valve which-will Work positively to shut off the Water-supply and which may be adjusted so as to automatically shut ott the supply at any desired time.
A further object of my invention is to construct the valve in such a way that it will be held closed by the pressure of the water-head, as well as by the water in the tank, and also to construct it so that it will be selt'-cleaningthat is, it will keep itself clean from rust or scale.
To this end my invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of the same, as will be hereinafter described, and then pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, formnga part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the views.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the valve embodying my invention, showing its connection with the oat; and Fig. 2 is a cross-section on the line 2 2 in Fig. 1.
The valve is provided with a casing 10, which is adapted to be held in the wall ofthe tank, the casing having at its inner end an open-bottom chamber 11 and at its outer end a chamber 12, the two chambers connecting by a longitudinal bore 13, around the outer end of which is a raised seat 13a. Asupplyspout 14 is connected with the chamber 12 of the casing by means of a common form of screw-coupling 15. Extending longitudinally, through the bore 13 is a three-cornered stem 16, although the stem may be of any shape; but the stem has, preferably, attened sides, so as not to interfere greatly With the flow of Serial No. 429,873. (No model.)
Water. The outer end of the stem 16 terminates in a valve 17, which is adapted to close against the seat 13a, and the inner end of the stem terminates in a loop 18, through which extends the swinging lever 19, this lever being held to swing in the chamber 11 and having its upper end pivoted inthe top of the casing, as shown at 20. The lever 19 is connected at its lower end With a rearwardly-extending rod or lever 21, and, if desired, these may be formed in bent pieces. The rod or lever 21 extends through a common form of iioat 22, and the float is adjusted on the rod by means of a set-screw 23, which extends through the nozzle 24E ot' the iioat and impinges on the rod.
The operation of the valve is as follows: When the water flows inward through the spout 14 and valve-casing 10 and is delivered into the tank, the iioat 22 Will prevent the inflowing water from closing the valve 17; but when the water in the tank rises to the required height it Will litt the oat 22 and tilt the lever 19, so as to close the valve 17 firmly upon its seat 13, and it Will be seen that if the oat should be broken or the rod 21 or lever 19 even should be broken the head of water would close the valve 17, so as to prevent the tank from overflowing.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as rnew and desire to secure by Letters Patent-n A safety-valve comprising a casing 10, having a vertically-extending chamber 11, open at its lower end, a transverse inlet-chamber 12, a passage 13, connecting the two chambers, a valve 17 in the chamber l2 and havinga stem 16, extending through passage 13 into chamber 11 and there provided With a loop, and a doar-operated lever 19, pivoted at its upper end in the upper end of the chamber 11 and extending down through said loop and the lower end of the chamber, substantially as set forth.
GAYLORD STURT HUNTER.
