G. H. MQGOWN.
f HAMMER.
No. 487,635. Patented Deo. 6, 1892.
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE H. MOGOWN, OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS.
HAMMER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,635, dated December 6, 1892.
Application liled October 26, 1891. Serial No. 409,864. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. McGowN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Lynn, in the county of.EsseX and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hammers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improved hammer, my aim being to provide an improved form of hammer-head in connection with the combination-tool which I have devised.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a view of a hammer embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 shows a detail view of the head of the hammer, illustrating particularly the try-square thereon.
In the iigures the handle-stock is shown at A and the head of the hammer at B. The head maybe of ordinary construction provided with a nailing end and a claw part for the drawing of nails. The face of the head is made smooth and is provided with an opening extending through it about centrally of the head, and in this opening is fitted the blade of a plane, as at a, held adjustably by means of a setscrew h or other suitable means. Thus a plane is provided at a point where the hammer is strongest and Where the greatest purchase can be secured, the claw of the hammer and the handle serving as means to grasp and push the plane.
The handle of the hammer is preferably of metal, though it may be of sheet metal covered with wood on each side, and between the side plates of this handle the various tools are located. One edge of the handle serves as a part of a square, the angular part extending, as at d, from the extended walls of the hammer-head at right angles thereto across to the claws of the hammer-head, this part serving as a strengthening-brace. The outer end is made bifurcated, as at c, so as not to interfere with the operation of the claw. The handle is preferably just one foot in length, and one or both faces thereof contain graduationmarks, such as inches and fractions thereof,
and in order to increase the capacity of the tool for measurement I locate within the handle an extension-rule, preferably a foot in length and properly graduated. Vhen this is swung out on the pivot fat the end of the handle, it makes, with the handle, a two-foot rule. Also located between or within the Walls of the handle Iprovide a cutting-blade g, a screwdriver h, a pair of dividers t', the foot-rule lc described, and a compass saw-blade Z, each folding into a recess adapted to receive it between partitions and each operating under spring-tension, as in the case of the blades of a knife. The tools all Work on a single pivot f, which is in the form of a bolt having a threaded end provided with a nut. This serves to hold the ends of the handle-plate securely together as the pivot of the various tools, and, further, permits of the ready removal of the tools or any one or more of them for repair, to be sharpened, or to be replaced by others. Each tool is provided with a finger-notch to enable it to be opened out for use.
While I have described my improvement as embodied in a combination-tool and have described the various instruments thus combined, it will be understood that I make no claim to these various parts or to the combination-tool as a Whole, nor do I limit myself to the application of the improvement to the particular form of hammer herein described.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, what I claim is A hammer-head provided with the usual curved claws, extended walls forming a contin uation of the handle-socket, and a strengthening-brace extending between the ends of the claws and the said walls, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE H. MCGOVN.
Witnesses:
