BALE TIE. No. 487,504. Patented Dec. 6, 1892.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD W. WICKEY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BALE-TIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,504, dated December 6, 1892.
Application filed March 16, 1892- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD W. WIoKEY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bale-Ties, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in wire bale-ties, the general purpose of which is to strengthen the knot in the wire and to enable the tie to be fastened as easily as possible. In these ties a loop is ordinarily made in one end of the wire and the other end passed through and bent over this loop. The difficulty which has been encountered is that the bend about the loop is so short as to endanger the breaking of the wire. Certain improvements have been made with a view to overcoming this by making the loop in the end of the wire double, and my invention is in somewhat the same general line, but is also designed to gain in addition to the advantages of the prior constructions referred to certain others tending to render the knot more permanent and the wire less likely to break.
The preferred form of inyinvention is shown in the two figures of the drawings, in which Figure 1 shows two ends of a bale-tie knotted or looped together, and Fig. 2 shows the same ends separated from each other.
The two ends are lettered A B, and the first important feature of myinvention is the formation upon one end B of a sliding loop or slip-knot, so bent that the loop thereof shall be double in order that the other end, which is to be fastened in said loop, may be less liable to break. In combination with this sliding loop upon one end any of the common means for fastening the other end in the loops heretofore used may be employed, or the other end of the wire may be left entirely plain and bent upward through the loop and backward about itself; but I prefer to use, in combina- Serial No. 425,108. (No model.)
tion with the sliding loop, an enlarged head, which forms another feature of my invention. This head is shown at the left hand in the drawings, and is formed by passing the Wire between two pins, then back and half-way around the same, and then back between the pins and twisting it upon the main strand of the wire. The use of this enlarged head in connection with the sliding loop saves the bending of the wire in fastening it about a bale, inasmuch as the slip-knot closes in about the twisted neck and prevents the head from being drawn through.
While the two ends of the bale-tie shown in the drawings appear to be quite different, they are yet alike to the extent that the easiest way of forming the sliding loop is to form an enlarged head similar to the one shown and then to bend the two loops of which it consists together. It will be noticed that the head lettered a upon the end lettered A is composed of two loops a a united by a connecting portion a In forming the head it is better to have the connecting portion a between the two wires a a In forming the loop, however, both of said wires which are lettered b 17 upon the loop end are arranged upon the same side of the connecting portion b and the two loops or eyes are bent toward each other upon this side until they take the position shown upon the end B.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A bale-tie having one end bent into two 0ppositely-arranged loops a a and then back upon and fastened to itself, and the other end bent back upon itself to form a loop, and the two strands of which said loop is composed then passed through the end thereof to form a double loop, substantially as described.
EDWARD W. WICKEY.
