METAL-SEAMING TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,320, dated December 6, 1892.

Be it known that I, CAsfroR H. A. Dissrnenn, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Wrightsville, in the county of York and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal- Seaming Tools, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to metalseamin g tools; and it consists in providing such a device with a verticallymoving jaw that is adapted to hold the seam closed while giving the overlapping portion a downward bend by the act of lowering the lever connecting with said member and to release the seam'by the act of raising said lever.
The object of my invention is to simplify and at the same time to increase the eiciency of such tools.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved tool, and Fig. 2 details showing the seam at different stages as it is being closed.
Referring to the several parts by letters of reference, A indicates the main or central jaw, which is provided upon one side with the usual angular projection g, that co-operates with the closing-jaw B, which is rst used to give the metal the initial bend, as shown at b, Fig. 2. The reverse side of the tool is then used by placing the tool, with the seam, loetween the rear portion of jaw A and the down- Wardly-extending member D, allowing the lap of the seam, as at b, Fig. 2, to extend under the tonguefof the jaw C. By pressing the lever connecting with the link S it will bring said jaw down upon the overlapping edge b of the seam and at the saine time hold the seam closed by means of the member D. This movement will give the seam the form shown at c, Fig. 2. Areverse movement of the lever will cause the tool to release the seam, which can then be finally closed by the use of jaw B in the usual way.
My invention is in providing the jaw C with the memberD to hold the seam closed while l operating upon it and in the means for givoperate with the vertical movement of the jaw C.
It will be observed that the jaw A is provided with a groove 72., the outer edge of which is chamfered ate, adapting said groove to receive a tongue f, located on the under surface of the jaw C and to give the seam the required form, while preventing its opening or becoming distorted at other parts. The vertical movement of the jaw C is secured by forming on its side offsets 'a n', whose angular extensions are adapted to receive the stanchions m m', attached to the main or central jaw A.
To impart movement to the jaw C, it is provided upon its upper edge with ears t t, which are perforated and pivotally connected to the downwardly-turned ends of the link S, which is journaled near its center tothe operatinglever connecting with the jaw B.
It will be observed that in operation the lever connecting with the jaw A will be held vertically and be used to keep the tool in place "while operating with the lever connecting with jaws B and C to give these parts the re quired movement to perform the work assigned to each.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a metal-seaming tool, pivoted handlevers connecting jaws A and C through the medium of a link S, thejaw A having stanchionsfmm', engaging offsets n 'a' on jaw C,the jaw A being provided with a groove h, and the jaw C with a tonguefand a member D, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a metal-scanning tool, the pivoted levers and link S, and jaws A, B, and-C, thejaw B having a circular movement and the jaw C a vertical movement, the jaw A being provided with stanchions m m', and the jaw C with angular guides n n', substantially as described.
