SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 451,644, dated May 5, 1891.

To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that 1, CHARLES C. 'l-nm'roaa citizen of the United States, residing at Eliza beth, Union county, New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Sets, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same.
This invention consists, partly,in a special construction of the anvil against which the setting-punch operates, partly in the means for adjustingsuch anvil, and partly in the construction of a bending-lever-pivoted upon the head separately from the lever which actu ates the setting-punch.
The invention will be understood by reference to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of asaw-set provided with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same; Fig. 3, a longitudinal section, where hatched, upon the center line of the same; Fig. 4, a view of the under side of the tool; Fig. 5, an end elevation of the front end; Fig. 6, a side elevation of the head detached from the other parts; Fig. 7, a view' upon the under side of such head, and Fig. 8 a view of theinner end of such head.
The head A carries the setting-punch and anvil suitably fitted within the same, and a punching-lever B and bending-lever O are pivoted independently on the head to actuate the punch and the bending-jaw separately. The head is formed with a vertical passage h and a transverse notch upon the under side,
forming two guides a", Fig. 6, by which the saw-set is supported upon the edge of the saw when in use. A cylindrical anvil-seat j is formed in the head transverse to the guides, and the anvil e is formed of a cylindrical plug flattened upon the side adjacent to the passage 7?. and formed with a notch 6 upon its lower corner to clear the saw-blade at the greatest angle that would be required to set a saw-tooth. A screw 76 is journaled in the anvil and tapped in the head which is formed to close'the end of the cylindrical seat. The anvil e is pressed normally away from the closed end of the cylindrical seat j by means of the spring 13 interposed between such parts and encircling the screw it. The lever is pivoted between lugs f upon the under side of the head, and a hole I), Fig. 7, is formed through the bottom of the head to project the arm into the socket a. A spring 3 is inserted between the lever B and the head and operates normally to retract the punch from the anvil, as shown in Fig. 1.
A bending-lever C is forked and provided with lugs g to embrace the exterior of the head at the sides of the passage h, where it is pivoted to the head in proximity to the guides 'r. The lugs are extended downward below the bottom of the punch t', and are there connected by a cross-bar d, which operates as a A spring 25 is inserted between the bending-lever and the head and operates normally to separate such lever from the lever B and to retract the bar (Z into contact with the head at the seats l, as shown in Fig. 1.
The movement of the lever G presses the bending-j aw toward the saw-blade when the latter is placed in contact with the face of the anvil, and an adj usting-screww is inserted through the lever into contact with the top of the head A to determine the movement of such jaw and the consequent set of the tooth.
The spring 25, which actuates the bendinglever G, is so proportioned in its strength and its relation to the fulcrum of the lever as to exert greater force or offer more resistance than the spring 3, so that when the levers are separated, as in Fig. 1, and the pressure is exerted upon them the punch-lever first yields and forces the punch toward the anvil.
Before the lovers are pressed together the saw-blade may be inserted into contact with the guides r, as indicated by the dotted lines m in Fig. 1, and the first pressure upon the levers therefore clamps the saw-tooth against the anvil by the movement of the punch 21. A continued pressure upon the handles then compresses the spring t, and the succeeding movement of the lever G presses the bendingjaw (1 against the saw-blade and bends it to the desired degree, as indicated by the lines m in Fig. 3. Such bending is limited by the contact of the gage-screw to with the head A, and any pressure exerted upon the handles subsequent to such contact operates wholly to actuate the punch-lever B and to press the punch more forcibly toward the seat. Such final action of the levers or handles of the tool operates to press the punch forcibly toward the anvil to bend the tooth positively, and thus serves to set the teeth with entire uniformity, which might not be the case if the punch were forced toward the anvil by spring-pressure only.
The pivoting of the lever C by lugs upon the outside of the head serves to leave the passage it entirely clear upon the upper side, as shown in Fig. 2, to permit the free inspection of the saw-teeth, which are presented upward against the guides r.
The end of the punch is tapered toward the top side, as indicated in the same figure, so as to engage but one tooth only, such form for the punch facilitating the placing of each tooth directly in front of it, as in similar sawsets, and thus avoiding the use of any toothsetting gage. Such a gage may, however, be applied to the set, if required.
Having thus set forth the nature of my invention, what I claim herein is 1. The combination, with the head of a sawset having a cylindrical anvil-seat, of an anvil-plug fitted to such seat and a screw journaled in said plug and tapped into the head, substantially as herein set forth.
2. The combination, with the head of a sawset having a cylindrical anvil-seat, of an anvil-plug fitted to such seat, a screw inserted through the plug and tapped into the seat, and a spring pressing the plug in opposition to the screw, substantially as herein set forth.
3. The combination, with the head of a sawset havinga guide for the edge of the saw, of an adjustable anvil adjacent to such guide, a punch with a punch-lever pivoted upon the head to actuate the same, abending-lever pivoted upon the head and provided with a bending-jaw, and aspring applied to such bendinglever to prevent its movement until thepunch has been shifted, as and for the purpose set forth.
l. The combination, with the head of a sawset having a guide for the edge of the saw, of a punch with a punch-lever pivoted upon the head to actuate the same, an anviladjustable upon the head transverse to the path of the punch,a bendingleverpivoted upon thehead and provided with a bending-jaw,a spring to retract the punch and punch-lever, and a spring of greater force applied to the bendinglever, as and for the purpose set forth.
5. The combination, with the head of a sawset, of a movable punclnla guide for the edge of the saw, and an anvil formed upon a cylindrical plug and adjustable in a cylindrical seat in the head transverse to the guide and the path of the punch, as and for the purpose set forth.
6. The combination, with the head A, provided with an anvil and a punch movable to and from the same, of the lever B, pivoted between lugs f upon the head and having the arm a fitted to the punch, as set forth, and the lever O, forked to embrace the outside of the head by lugs g and provided with the cross-bar (1, connecting the sides of the fork beneath the head, as and for the purpose set forth.
7. The combination, with the head A, pro vided with an anvil adjustable in a cylindrical seat and with the punch 1', having the notch 0, of the lever B, pivoted between lugs f upon the head and provided with the arm a and springs, as set forth,the lever C, pivoted upon the head by lugs g and provided with the cross-bar (Z, the spring applied to the said lever, and the seatsZ to limit the motion of the cross-bar, as and for the purpose set forth.
S. The combination, with the head of a sawsct having a guide for the edge of a saw, of an anvil adjacent to such guide, a punch with a punch-lever pivoted upon the head to actuate the same, a bending-lever pivoted upon the head and provided with a bending-jaw and with the gage-screw w, and the springs 9 applied to the punch-lever and bending-lever, the whole arranged and operated to first press the punch upon the saw-tooth against the anvil and then to press the jaw upon the sawblade to bend the tooth, and finally, when the gage-screw is in contact with the head, to press the punch forcibly toward the anvil to bend the tooth positively at the desired angle.
