SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 486,965, dated November 29, 1892.

Application filed June 1'7 1892.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY GASPAR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention has relation -to improvements in toys or puzzles; and it has for its general object to provide a toy or puzzle of a cheap and simple construction, adapted to illustrate in an amusing manner the story of Columbus and the Egg, as well as to afford amusement and try the skill of the user.

\Vith the foregoing and other objects in view the novelty of the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims, when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of my improved toy or puzzle. Fig. 2 is avertical diametrical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of a modification. 'Fig. 4 is a similar view of another modification, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the piece of metal employed in conjunction with the hollow eggshaped body shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.

Referring by letter to said drawings, A indicates the casing of my improved toy, which is preferably of a circular form, as shown, and is provided with a pedestal or base B and a top 0, which latter is preferably formed from glass and is preferably connected to the upper edge of the side wall of the 02s ing, as shown. Arranged within the casing, and preferably immediately above the pedestal or base B, is a platform A, which may be formed from any suitable material and is designed to support the movable body, presently to be described. Seated within the pedestal or base B is a magnet D, preferably of the usual horseshoe form, which is arranged withits poles uppermost, as shown, and is designed to operate to a purpose presently set forth.

tion, and this is attained by manipulating the casing until the body E rests over the magnet. This in practice will be found quite difficult, and will afford much amusement, especially when an egg-shaped body is employed, as shown, which by reason of its eccentric shape is difficult to guide.

In Fig. 3 of the drawings I have illustrated a hollow egg shaped body E, carrying a bowed strip of metal F, which body is loosely mounted upon a pedestal or base B, carrying a bar-magnet D.

The constructions disclosed in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings, while embodying the general principle of my invention, are calculated to amuse rather than to try the skill of the operator. The manner of using these latter constructions is to simply lay the egg-shaped body upon the pedestal or base, so that said body will be raised to and held in a perpendicular position by reason of the magnet attracting the metal carried by the body.

Although I prefer in practice to employ a pedestal or base and a platform, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, I do not desire to be confined to the same, as the'pedestal or base may be made of a larger diameter, so as to serve at once to support the magnet and afford-a surface for the body E to roll upon, and, in fact, any suitable construction for supporting the magnet and the movable body may be employed.

Having described my invention, what- I claim is- 1. A magnetic toy comprising a pedestal, a magnet fixed therein and exposed through the top thereof, and an egg-shaped object or fragment thereof, carrying a piece of metal or other material of magnetic property in one I0 shaped object or fragment carrying a piece of metal or other material of magnetic property in one end, to be operated substantially as and for the purpose specified.
