Description

(No Model.) I S. W. BARTHOLOMEW. FIRE TONGS.
No. 486,963. v PatentedNov. 29,1892,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SIDNEY W. BARTHOLOMEW, OF OASTALIA, NORTH CAROLINA.
FIRE-TONGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 486,963, dated November 29, 1892.
Application filed May 20, 1892.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIDNEY W. BARTHOLO- MEW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Castalia, in the county of Nash and State of North Garolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Tongs,as set forth in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fire-tongs embodying my invention, showing the arms open. Fig. 2 is a similar view showingthe arms closed.
My invention relates to fire-tongs; and it consists of the constructions and combinations of devices, which I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now describe its construction and indicate the manner in which the same is carried out.
In carrying out my invention I form the arm A at one end with a handle portion B, provided with a longitudinal slot 0. The other arm A is provided at one end with a circular or curved head B, which passes through the slotted portions of the handle B and is piv otally secured therein by a pin or rivet a, said curved head having, also, a slot 0 at right angles to the slot 0, through which passes and is guided the inner portion of the handle B of the arm A.
In constructing my tongs I have found it desirable to use heavy wire, as the same is more readily manipulated to impart to the arms the peculiar shapes shown. when using wire, I form the device of but two pieces, the arm A being bent to its proper shape to form the shoulder d and the outer free end of the wire bent back upon itself to form the slot 0 and the handle portion. The other arm A is likewise bent to form the shoulder e and the outer end of its wire bent into approximately-circular form to constitute the handle Serial No. 433,749. (No model.)
or head B, said wire having its free and passed through the slot C of the head B, and thence passed under the handle portion B near its shoulder portion, and thence carried to and around the arm A at its shoulder e, and finally bent back upon itself to form the slot 0', and has its free end welded or otherwise secured to the curved head, as shown.
At the point where the curved head passes through the slotted head B, I pivotally secure the said head by a rivet g, which forms the axis, about which the movable arm A turns in opening and closing the tongs.
The operation of this device is similar to others of a like nature. It is simple in construction and not liable to get out of order. It may also be cheaply made, and will be found very effective in operation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A fire-tongs consisting of the arm A, having the slotted-handle portion, and the arm A, pivotally secured in said slotted portion and having a slotted guide at right angles to the slot in the handle B, through which the arm A passes.
2. A fire-tongs consisting of the arm A, formed of wire having one end bent to form a handle portion and having said end turned back upon itself to form the slot 0, in combi nation with the arm A, formed of wire having one end bent into curved form with the free end of the wire passed through and pivoted within the slot in the handle portion of the arm A and having said free end embracing the two arms A and A and bent back upon itself to form the slot C, arm A passes, substantially as herein described.
