STEAM H EATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 486,862, dated N'ovember 2Q, 1892. Application filed February 9, 1892. Serial No. 420,845. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN A, FLAJOLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bay City,in the county of Bay and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Heaters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap and easily-operated steam-heating device and at the same time provide for the full utilization of the heat developed from the combustion of the fuel.
Another object is to provide a combustionchamber and tire-pot for a steam-heater, that is not liable to burn out and in which all of the surfaces in contact with the fire is provided on its opposite surface with a watercontact.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of the parts, together with the construction and operation of the same, as I shall hereinafter describe and explain in detail, and which will also be definitely pointed out in the claim of this specification.
My invention will be found illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which the tigures of reference used in the following description will be found indicating the same parts throughout the several views.
Figure l is a vertical transverse section of my improved heater. Fig. 2 is alongitudinal vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section of my improved heater in a modified form. Fig. 4 is a transverse section of the same.
1 represents a vertical rear or backwater section composed of the inner sheet 2 and the outer sheet 3, with their edges turned toward each other and secured together to form a water and steam chamber 4.
5 is a front vertical water-section composed of the outer sheet 6 and the inner sheet 7, arranged in a manner similar to the rear section and provided with a water and steam chamber 8 and with an opening 9 for fuel, which is closed by a door 10, hinged in the usual way.
11 are a series of horizontal tubes for containing water, and are located above the doorway 9 and parallel with each other, and have their ends passed through the inner sheets 2 and 7, and secured in position by Hanging or other usual manner, so that the central openings of the tubes communicate with the cham.
bers 4 and 8, whereby water contained in the chambers 4 and 8 has a free passage through the tubes.
12 are a series of horizontal tubes similar to the tubes 1l, and are arranged parallel with the tubes 1l and with each other, and are located on each side of the doorway and passed through and secured to the inner sheets 2 and 7 in the same manner as the tubes 1l, leaving a space 13 in front of the doorway, which extends to the rear section 1 and forms a combustion-chamber, the side tubes forming the sides of. the chamber while the upper tubes form the top thereof. Within the lower portion of the combustion chamber 13 is placed a fire-pot 14, which is formed with a hollow shell 15, inclosing an annular waterspace 16, and with front and rear pipes 17 and 18, connected with the upper portion of the space 16 and with the lower portion of the inner sheets 2 and 7, so that water communication is formed through the pipes from the space 16 to the chamber 4 and 8. Within or directly below the lower edge of the fire-pot a grate 19 is placed and is supported in any convenient manner for carrying the fuel, and below the grate is arranged an ash-pit 20 with a doorway 2l, which is provided with a door 22, hinged to the doorway at its upper edge, so as to be automatically operated for regu lating the draft to the tire, as I shall presently explain.
23 is a horizontal tube centrally located above the series of tubes 11 and is of considerably-greater transverse dimensions, and the ends of this tube arepassed through the upper portions of the inner sheets 2 and 7, so as to connect and form a communication fol steam between the upper portion of the vertical chambers 4 and 8.
24 is a casing of brick or iron surrounding the entire series of tubes and the end sections and inclosing a heating-chamber 25, which then contains the end sections and tube series. To the upper portion of this casing, and communicating with the chamber 25, is connected a pipe 26 for taking away the gases of combustion. from the heating-chamber, and in this pipe is arranged adamper 27,

hung on pivots 28 and to one of these pivots is connected a lever 29. The upper' and lower series of tubes and the end sections 1 and 5 are filled with Water to a point level with the upper tubes of the upper series, and fire is provided in the fire-pot. The draft of air then passing at the draft-door and through the grate causes the heated gases developed from the burning fuel to rise and pass between and surround the series of tubes containing the water and also to come in contact with the inner sheets of the front and rear vertical Water-sections, and steam generated thereby rises to the large tube 23 and from thence through asuitable pipe 30 to the radiators of a building inV the usual manner to be returned to the heater in a condensed form through a pipe 3l. It will be noticed that a large surface for heating the Water is provided by this construction, as the heat is confined within a comparatively-small space and is brought in contact with all of the inner exposed surfaces of the heating-chamber and its contents, so that While the water contained in the heater is quickly convertedinto steam the steam before passing into the dis-l tributing-pipe is superheated and thoroughly dried, the tube 23 lying in such a position as to be thoroughly acted upon by the heated gases, and the series of tubes being arranged to lie parallel and contiguous to each other and to communicate with the vertical chambers at each end provides a free and rapid circulation of the water through all parts of the heater, and also provides a free and unimpeded exit for the steam from the tube and insures even and uniform steam pressure and supply.
32 is a pipe connected with the water portion of the front vertical section, and this pipe extending upwardly is connected to a diaphragm-damper-regulating device 33, carrying a lever 34 pivotally secured toafulcrum 35,*and to one end of the lever is secured achain 36, which leads to and is connected to the draft-door 21, so that as the lever 34 is lifted by a pressure in the heater more than normal the door 22 is closed over the doorway 21, and the lever 34 is also pivotally attached to the damper-lever 29, so that as the lever 34 is operated by the regulating device for closling the draft-door the lever 29 is also operated to turn the damper 27 across the smokepipe, so that the heat of combustion is thereby retained Within the outside casing 24 and in contact with the heating-surfaces of the apparatus.
As shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the end sections 1 and 5, instead of being composed of two sheets, as before described, can be constructed of a series of pipes 37, arranged in vertical series side by side, and the tubes 11 and 12 are then inserted in lthe inner sides of the vertical pipes in the same location and distrib ution as before described, and in this form the large steam-tube 23 is located transversely With-the tube 11 and is vconnect-ed to the upper ends of t-he pipes 37 by a series of pipes 38, so that the steam made in the horizontal tubes and the Vertical pipes is conveyed directly to the steam-tube and thence by the exit-pipe to the radiators.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secu re by Letters Patent, is-
In a steam-heating apparat-us, the combina tion ot the rear vertical section 1, containing chamber or chambers 4, and the front vertical section 5, containing chamber or chambers 8, and a fuel-opening 9, a combustion-chamber in front of the fuel-opening 9, the series of horizontal tubes 11 with their opposite ends connected to the adjacent sides of the said vertical sections above the combustion-chamber, the series of horizontal tubes 12, arranged on the lateral sides of the combustion-chamber and having their opposite ends connected with the said vertical sections, a re-pot 14 below the combustion-chamber and provided with an annular water-space 16, the pipes 17 and 1S for connecting the water-space 16 With the front and rear vertical sections, a grate 19 below the tire-pot, and a large steam-tube 23 above the series of tubes 11 and with its ends connected to the upper portions of the said vertical end sections, substantially as set forth.
