UNITED i STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH M. WOOD, OF ALBION, WISCONSIN.
HOLDER FOR TOBACCO-LATHS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 486.804, dated November 22, 1892.
Application iiled April 5,1892. Serial No. 427,882. (No model.)
.To all whom t may concern.-
Beit known that I, JOSEPH M. WOOD, a citizen of the United States, residing at A1- bion, in the county of Dane and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Holder for Tobacco-Laths, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in holders for tobacco-laths, the objects in view being to provide a cheap and simple device adapted to be applied to either the vertical or under sides of joists'in smoke-houses or rooms or to any other suitable horizontal or vertical support and to conveniently (and in accordance with the height of the person stripping the tobacco) support the laths after the tobacco is dried and during the stripping operation thereof.
Various other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tobacco-holder constructed in accordance with my invention, the same being shown in operative position. Fig. 2 is a detail in perspective of one of the holding members. Fig. 3 Vis a longitudinal section thereof.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the gures of the drawings.
In practicing my invention I employ a pair of what I will herein term lath-supporting members or supports, and as they are but duplicates in construction a description of one will sufiice for both.
1 designates an inverted- L- shaped securing-plate, which is provided both at its upper horizontal portion and its lower depending vertical portion with a pair of screw-holes 2, whereby the plate is adapted by passing the screws through the upper holes to be secured to the lower horizontal or under side of a joist or beam of a building or by passing the screws through the lower holes to be secured to the vertical side thereof, as may be most desirable and convenient. Near its lower end the plate is further provided with a centrallylocated hole 3, through which a pivot-bolt 4 passes, and is provided at its outer end with a clamping thumb-screw 5. A metal strap or arm 6 is perforated and at its upperend rcceives the screw 4, whereby it becomes pivoted to the aforesaid inverted-L-shaped securing-plate, and through the medium of the clamping thumb-nut it will be obvious that the strap may be laterally swung to any angle and secured rigidly at such point, as indicated in dottedlines in Fig. 1. The lower end of thestrap is provided with a pair of opposite inwardly-turned keepers 8 and between its ends with a series of perforations or adj ust-ing-holes, or, as I prefer and as herein shown, with alongitudinal slot 10. A perforationll is formed in the upper end of a depending hanger-strap l2, which is mounted for longitudinal movement between the keepers 8, and through the perforation and slot of the straps is passed a bolt 13, the same being provided with a clamping thumb-nut 14, which may be run down upon the screw, and thus serve to lock the hanger-strap at any point along the strap 7. The lower end of the hanger-strap is given a quarter-twist, as at 14', and is inclined slightly at an angle and beyond the twist bent over and upon itself to form a supporting-hook 15. This completes the construction of one of the holders, and the two, as will be readily surmised, are arranged opposite each other and suspended from a ceiling, joist, or other suitable support. The tobacco-holding laths 17 are mounted in the hooks, and by a proper adjustment through the medium of the clamping-nuts and adjusting-bolts may be raised and lowered or swung to any desired angle for the purpose of accommodating the same to the convenient reach of the tobacco-stripper. In this manner it will be seen that I avoid the second handling of the tobacco-that is, in removing the same from the laths or sticks and subsequently'stripping from thevstems and, furthermore, that in lieu thereof the tobacco is stripped directly from the sticks or laths and both hands of the operator are free for use. When the device is not in use, it may be swung up out of the way and operative position.
Having described myY invention, what I claim is 1. A holder for tobacco-laths, having a securing-plate for attachment to a joist, wall, or
IOO
other support, and a hanger pivotally connected to said securing-plate and comprising two relatively-adj ustable sections arranged to slide upon each other and slotted toreceive a securing-bolt, the lower section being provided at its lower end with a hook to engage the tobacco-Slat, substantially as specified.
2. A holder for tobacco-lathe, having an inverted- L- shaped securing-plate for attachment to a joist, wall, ne., and having a perforation in its vertical portion, a hanger-strap comprising two relatively-adj ustable sections, the lower of which is provided at its lower end with a latir-holding hook and the upper of which is provided with a perforation to register with that in the securing-plate, and an adjusting-bolt engaging said registeringperforations and provided with a tighteningnut, whereby t-he hanger-strap may be locked at any desired inclination or angular adjustment, substantially as specified.
3. 1n a holder for tobaoco-laths, the combination, with a stationary securing-plate, of a jointed hanger-strap pivotally connected to said securing-plate and comprising relativelyadjustable upper and vlower sections, the upper section being slotted and provided atits lower extremity with keepers and the lower section being slotted, fitting in said keepers and provided with a lath-supporting hook, and the clamping-bolt engaging' said slots, substantially as specitied.
4L. In a tobacco-lath holder, the combination, with a securing-plate, of a hanger-strap pivotally connected to a vertical portion of said plate by means of a clamping-bolt and having its lower end twisted at right angles and bent upon itself to form a lath-supporting hook, whereby said strap may be clamped at any desired inclination, its width being parallel with the direction of the strain, sub stantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afixed my signature in the presence ot' two witnesses.
JOSEPH M. WOOD.
