DECAPPING AND RECAPPING TOOL.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN H. BARLow, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven,in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Decapping and Recapping Tools; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hand-loading tools for cartridges; but it is more particularly the object of myinvention to provide a combined decapping and recapping tool for use in reloading rifle and pistol cartridges, which shall be simple and cheap in construction, and which may be readily adapted to shells of various calibers; and with these ends in view my invention consists in the construction and combination of elements hereinafter fully explained, and then recited in the claims.

In order that those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains may fully understand its construction and method of operation, I will describe the same in detail, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 shows my invention in side elevation. Fig. 2 is a detail horizontal section through Fig.1 at the line y y; Fig. 3, a detail section through the end of one of the handles; Fig. 4, a detail front elevation of a seat-block of smaller size than shown at Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 a decapping-plug of a smaller size.

A pair of handles 1 and 2 are pivoted together, as at 3. The handle 1 is furnished with a stud or seater 4, adapted to engage with and seat the primer in the recess provided therefor in the base of the shell.

The handle 2 at 3 is recessed or bowed laterally, as seen particularly at Fig. 2, and in this recess or bow is inserted a semicircular seat-block 5, which is detachably secured in place by means of a thumb-screw 6, passing through the handle and entering a threaded hole in the seat-block, as clearly appears at Fig. 2. At the lower edge of the bowed part of the handle is formed a narrow shelf or flange 12. (Shown in edge View at Fig. 1 and in dotted lines at Fig. 2.) The block 5 rests upon this, thereby relieving the screw from the strain caused by the capping operation. I provide with each tool a number of seatblocks of various internal diameters, which are readily insertible for use in connection with shells of different sizes. The outer end of the handle 2 is socketed and is designed to support therein a decapping-plug 7, which is held in place by a thumb-screw 8, and Iintend to furnish with each tool several plugs. The plug has a primer-punch 9 seated in its end and held therein by a screw 10, and by removing the punch the plug may serve as a rammer or wad-seater, if required.

By the use of detachable seat-blocks of the semicircular shape shown the operation of insertin g the shellto receive the primer is greatly facilitated and time saved as compared with the time required to inserta shell in a capping-tool having a hole through one of the handles. The ease with which my improved tool may be changed to operate'on different calibers makes it extremely convenient to the sportsman.

I claim- 1. In a tool of the character described, a pair of handles pivoted together, one of said handles bearing a seating and the other handle having a lateral bend or recess, in combination with a semicircular shell seat-block fitted to said bend and a screw wherebysaid block is held and detached, substantially as specified. A decappingand recapping-tool, the same consisting of the pivoted handles, as described, whereof one is provided with a curved blockholding recess adapted to hold the seatingblock and with asocket for holding the decapping-block, and means for fastening the latter, and the removable seating-block adapted to and secured in the recess, the whole arranged substantially as described.
