PROCESS OF PRODUCING lNLAlD WORK ONSTONES.
$EECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 486,590, dated November 22, 1892.
Application filed F bruary 1, 1892- Serial No. 419,983. (No specimens!) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RUDOLF RAUSOH, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Vienna, Austria-Hungary, have invented Improvements in Inlaid Work on Stones, (for which I have not obtained a patent in any country,) of which the followingis a specification.
The object of this invention is to produce mother-of-pearl, snail, or mussel shells or metal inlaid work on all kind of stones for fancy goods, furniture, 80c.
The invention consists in the new and improved process and means of producing inlaid work on stones, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully described, and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.
To carry my invention into efiect, the outlines of the desired pattern, figure, or ornament are first drawn and cut by a sharp and pointed instrument or tool on the surface of the stone. Acid is then applied on the so-produced engraving by means of a brush or other suitable appliances until the desired depth is obtained. As the acid never will produce uniform-shaped cavities, the latter are excavated and dressed by means of hand-tools. The pattern or design is now made up of mother-ofpearl, snail, or mussel shells or metal, either by cement or by other adhesive ingredients, to correspond in shape and design with the excavations on the stone and are when dried cemented therein; or, if preferred, the pattern can be made in sections and each section separably cemented into its respective place in the excavation. WVhen the cement has dried, the stone, with its inlaid work, is polished and finished.
I am aware of English Patent No. 1,744, granted in 1879 to A. W. Pennington, wherein he claims the method and means of producing ornamental designs in different-colored metals and the manufacture from said material of various articles of jewelry, &c.; but that is not what I claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The above-described method of producing mother-of-pearl, snail, or mussel shells, or metal inlaid work on stones, consisting first in drawing and cutting with a sharp tool the desired ornament or figure on the stone, then in applying acid on the so-produced engraving until the required depth is obtained, afterward in finishing and dressing the so-produced excavations bya hand-tool, then again in combining the mother-of-pearl, snail, or mussel shells, or metal into the pattern corresponding in shape with the excavations on the stone, and finally in cementing said patterns in Whole or in sections into said excavations, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
