SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 486,283, dated November 15, 1892.
Application filed June 30, 1892. Serial No, 43 8.530. (No model.) v
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB HENRY GEORGE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of White Pigeon, in the county of Whiteside and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin OraneMechanism for Handling Milk-Cans, &c.; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which 'form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of the invention. Fig. 2 is a section of the block on line was.
The invention has relation to apparatus for cooling and handling milk in cans, the object being to provide a simple and conveniently-operated means for the purpose named, wherebya saving of manual labor may be effected; and the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter specified.
In the accompanying drawings the letter A refers to a cooling-tank, which may be of any'suitable form and dimensions, and is designed to contain water, into which the cans of milk are placed for cooling purposes.
B designates the crane mechanism in connection with said tank ,for the purpose of lifting the cans into and out of the tank. Said mechanism comprises the following construction.
0 is a rod made fast to the tank at its end portions in any approved manner and running longitudinally of said tank on one side thereof, near the lower edge, and distant from the tank a short interval.
D is an elongated sleeve, which may consist of a piece of gas-pipe arranged to slide freely on the rod 0.
E is a block formed with a groove e in its under face and arranged to slide freely on the upper lateral edge a of the tank. Said block is connected by braces b b with the sleeve or pipe D. Located in the groove e are preferably two antifriction-rollers g g to facilitate the movement of the block.
F is the main arm or standard of the crane, having a cylind ric lower portion passing loosely through asocket G in the block E and entering at its lower end a socket or bearing G on the sleeve or pipe D. At the upper end of the arm F is a horizontal arm H, having therein several bearings f for the shaft of a small pulley I, which is thereby capable of adj ustmcnt to dilferent positions.
J is a bracket carried by the intermediate portion of the arm F and in which is journaled a shaft or spool K, having a ratchetwheel L and a crank L. Pivotally secured to said arm F is also a dog or pawl M for the ratchet-wheel L. Said shaft or spool carries a rope or cable N, which passes up and over the pulley I and is provided at its other eX- tremity with a hook O for engagement with the handle or other attachment of a milk-can.
It will be apparent that by sliding the block E to the proper point the crane may be moved into position to handle a can in any part of the box or tank; also, that the shaft may be turned in its bearings and the pulley I adjusted to handle the cans at different distances from the tank or to swing them from the tank to any desired adjacent point.

The combination, with the cooling tank or receptacle for milk-cans, the longitudinal rod secured thereto, the sleeve sliding on said rod, and the block arranged to slide freely on the edge of said tank and connected by braces to said sleeve, of the crane-arm having loose hearings in said sleeve and block, the shaft or spool, its ratchet and pawl carried by said arm, the adjustable pulley also carried thereby, and the rope or cable having a hook attached thereto, substantially as specified.
