Description

(No Model.)
J. W. TEETZEL. Device for Raising Tiles.
m gzm No. 232,089. Patented-Sept. 7,1880.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN W. TEETZEL, OF BENTON HARBOR, MICHIGAN.
DEVICE FOR RAISING TILES.
SPEGIFICATIPN forming part of Letters Patent No. 232,089, dated September 7, 1880, Application filed March 4, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom t't may concern Be it known that I, JOHN W. TEE'rzEL, of Benton Harbor in the county of Berrien and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Raisin g Tiles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in devices for raising and lowering tiles; and it consists in the combination of two castings which are provided with adjustable bearings, and which castings are united together by a connecting-rod which has a hole through its center, so as to slide upon a guide-rod, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are end views of the same.
a to represent two castings of any desired length, and which are loosely connected together by the rod or plate 0. Both of these castin gs are enlarged at the corners, and these corners d are turned inward at right angles to the length of the casting, for the purpose of attaching the adjustable bearings e to the castings by means of the set-screws t. ings e are provided with the slots 0 where the screws pass through them, so that they can be moved in and out on the castings, and thus be adjusted to the size of the pipe or tile that is to be raised from or lowered into the well. These bearings are to be made the whole length of the castings, and are to befaced with leather, gutta-percha, or other suitable material, so that These bean there will be no slipping while the pipe or tile is suspended.
Each one of the castings a is provided with an eye, 1", for the attachment of a rope or wire, by means of which the device is to be operated.
There is to be placed in the center of the well a guiding-rod for guiding the tiles or pipes into place, and this rod is passed through the hole in the center of the plate 0, so as to keep the device always centered.
One rope or wire is secured to one casting and the other rope or wire to the other casting, and by pulling on the rope or wire that is secured to the lowest casting the two castings can be forced apart by the connecting-rod with sufficient force to cause the bearing to take a firm hold of the inside of the pipe. By pulling on the rope or wire that is fastened to the upper casting the bearings are loosened from their holds. These bearings being made adjustable, the device can be adapted to different-sized pipes and tiles.
Having thus described my invention, I claim-- 1. The combination of the two castings a, connecting-rod c, bearings e, and clampingbolts '6, the bearings being slotted and held in position by the grooves in the sides of the heads, substantially as shown.
2. The combination of the two castings a, connecting-rods 0, and bearings, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 19th day of October, 1879.
Witnesses: JOHN W. TEETZEL.
