HENRY J. GILCHER, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
DOOR-MAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 486,178, dated November 15, 1892.
' Application filed December IlJ 1891. Serial No. 414,755. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY J. GILoHER,a
. citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county ot' Cuyahoga, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Mats; and I do hereby declare the following, with the accompanying drawings, to be a full, clear, and an exact description of my said invention.
My invention relates to metal door-mats; and its object is a construction-of mat which is very rigid, strong, durable, and neat in appearance and which can be manufactured at comparatively-small expense.
The invention consists in the details of construction and combination of parts described herein, and defined in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan of my device, and Fig.2 is a partial section on the line :10 of Fig. l.
The mat is formed of a single piece of hoop steel or iron A, of any desired gage and width, the same being bent around, as illustrated, to the desired form. In bending the strip of metal A, I first bend the inner end, as seen at c, Figl, then make the bend at d, and continue the bends of metal, as shown, till the mat is of a desired size, when the outer end is riveted or otherwise secured to the outer lap, as seen at e, Fig. l. The laps are straight from end to end of the lap. The metal strip A being bentas described, I then punch holes, through which I run the binding-rods B B. A ferrule fis placed around the rods B B between each lap of the bent metal strip A to hold said laps and keep them from lateral movement on said rods. The rods are secured at one end by a nut g g', screwed upon them, so that the ferrules fand the laps of bent metal A may be drawn close together.
This construction of mat allows the use of light metal and makes a very strong device that will not bend or warp out of shape and can be manufactured at small expense.
These mats are suitable for door-mats, ele- Vators, street-cars, and many other uses.
What I claim as my invention is- In a door-mat, a single piece of metal A, having the inner bend d and the continued bends and laps, as shown, each lap being 5o straight from end to end of the lap, the outer lap being secured, as illustrated, at e, holes through the side laps and end laps, bindingrods B B through said holes, and ferrules f around the rods B B between the several 55 laps of metal A, as shown and described.
HENRY J. GILCHER.
