Description

(No Model.) 1 I G. B. RUSSELL. MACHINE FOR POINTING PIGKBTS AND SHINGLES..
Patented Nov. 1
MWM
) moi/1421 UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
GEORGE B. RUSSELL, OF FORT PAYNE, ALABAMA.
MACHINE FOR POINTING PICKETS AND SHINGLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 485,431, dated November 1, 1892.
Application filed September 30, 1891. Serial No. 407,347. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. RUSSELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Fort Payne, in the county of De Kalb and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Pointing Pickets and Shingles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a side View. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section. Fig. 3 is a sectional detail view.
This invention has relation to machines for pointing pickets and shingles; and it consists inthe novel construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter specified.
In the accompanying drawings the letter A designates a suitable table or support having near its forward edge a longitudinal slot (1. Secured between the walls of the said slot by a bolt 1), on which it has a pivotal movement, is the lower portion of a box or guide B, the rear end of which is adjustably supported on a post 0. The sides and bottom portions of this box or guide are made in separate pieces in order that they may be adjusted to hold one or more pickets or shingles at the same time. Said side portions may be secured to the post O by means of a bolt 0, which engages any one of a series of apertures, as shown. The lower portions of said side pieces are provided with the parallel angular shoulders d d, which determine the angle of the point formed, and it will be seen that this angle is varied as the box or guide is raised or lowered.
D is a post supported on the table at the rear edge of the slot at and back of the lower portion of the box or guide. In this post isa slot 01, in which is pivoted one end of a cutter-carrying lever E. In said slot is also a spring E, which is so arranged as to raise or elevate said lever when it is depressed.
F is the cutter carried by the lever E and reciprocating vertically when said lever is operated. Said lever maybe operated by hand or it maybe connected, as shown, with apedal G underneath the table. It is held to its proper movemeut by the guides g g, secured to the table. In the lower portion of the bottom of the box is the slot or opening H, through which fall the cuttings. The guidebar is provided with holes h underneath the lever, which are filled with lead or other suitable filling to prevent the undue wearing of the box. The side portion of the box maybe cut away, as shown at I, to facilitate the insertion of the hand to hold the shingle, picket, or other article being cut.
Having described this invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein-described machine for pointing pickets, shingles, &c., said machine comprising a table or support having near its fora Ward edge a longitudinal slot at, an inclined box or guide B, pivotally secured at its lower portion in said slot, the post 0 of said table forming an adjustable support for the upper end of said box, the parallel angular shoulders d d on the lower ends of the side portions of the box, the opening H in the lower portion of the bottom of said box, the post D,
supported on said table at the rear of the slot at and back of the lower portion of the guidebox, a cutter-carrying lever pivoted at one end in a slot in said post, a spring in said slot arranged to elevate said lever, the guides g g, secured to the table for said lever, and the cutter on said lever, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
G. B. RUSSELL. Witnesses:
T. O; CAREY, L. W. DIOKEY.
