To all whom it may concern,.-

Beit known that I, EDWARD H. DURKEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kenosha, in the county of Kenosha and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Head-Rests, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in detachable head-rests for car-seatsand like uses, and is more particularly in the nature of an improvement in folding head-rests. Devices of this nature now in common use are usually made of a wire frame carrying a crossstrip of wire or of fabric to be in its nature iexible and capable of folding, and the foregoing features are adopted in connection with my construction. Y

The object of my invention is to produce a head-rest of the character named which shall be readily folded into a comparatively-small compass, so as to be easily carried in the pocket or satchel, and which at the same time shall be light and strong and of a character to remain firmly held in a position to which it may be adjusted for use.

To the foregoing ends my invention consists in a head-rest made of wire or the like, comprising a lower part capable of being hooked over'the `back of the seat and an upper part composed of members hinged to the lower part and capable of receiving and sustaining in an extended position the fabric which receives the head, a sleeve or similar device serving to cover the hinge and render the same iniiexible and a brace being caused to extend from one side ofthe frame to the other and having a pivotal connection with the frame at each end, whereby all the members of the device may be folded upon each other into a small compass to be easily packed in the valise or pocket for transportation.

My invention consists, further, in the preferred general and specific details of construction and combinations of parts, all as hereinafter more fully set forth.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View illustrating my improved head-rest extended and applied to a car-seat back. FigA 2 is an enlarged sectional view of a part of one of the side pieces, and Fig. 3 a perspective view of the end of the cross-brace.

A represents the hook-shaped rod intended to pass over and embrace the car-seat back. Two such hooks or braces A are provided. At about the point of curvature of the rod A enlargements t are arranged in pairs to leave the interior reduced section s. The enlargements t may be in the form of washers or otherwise, as may be found convenient. A rod B, which acts as a brace, is hooked over at each end, as indicated at r, and caused to embrace the rods A between the enlargements t. The hooks r are of an interior dimension to afford a loose joint at the connection, so that the members A and B may readily turn on each other.

Soldered or otherwise secured to the rods A at the forward part of the point of curvature are wires O, in length about equal to the intended height of the head-rest. The wires C are preferably composed of two members p o, hinged together, as indicated at n, the hinge being such as to permit the members p to be turned' back parallel with the members o. Any kind of hinge for this purpose may be employed that is satisfactory, it being desirable, however, that the hinge shall not produce an enlargement of the wire at that point. This quality is observed in the form illustrated; but I do not desire to limit myself thereto. On each wire C and capable of moving freely thereon is a sleeveD/the purpose of which is to slide over the hinged joint when the wires are extended in use, s o as to prevent one member in the hinge from folding on the other, and whennot in use or when it is desired to fold the device the sleeves D are slid along the wires away from the joint, so as to permit the latter to be used. Itis desirable that the wires C shall terminate in eyes m. The fabric or other medium which is intended to receive the head, and which is shown in the form of a leather strip E inthe illustrated device, is provided with rings or loops Z on its lateral edges, the corner rings being intended to be attached to the eyes m at the upper end and to a proper receiving device at the lower end and the intermediate loops or rings Z being adapted to embrace and slide upon the wires C. It is desirable to connect the lower extremities of the rods A, so as to bring them as near as possible together, thereby to cause as great a distension as possible of the wires C. For this purpose] pro- Vide the eyes 7a at the lower end of each rod A, from one to the other of which extends a cord h, as indicated in the drawings.

To enable my device to be operated, I proceed as follows: The wires C being extended and the sleeves D being brought down to cover the hinged joints, the rods A are hooked over the seat-back, to the curvature of which they conform, when the head-rest E will be found to be taut and serve as a comfortable yielding rest for the head. To fold the parts together after removing the device from the seat-back, the sleeves D are slid away from the hinged joints, each wire C is bent down at the hinge, so that the members will be parallel, and the rods A are turned upon the brace B to lie liatwise upon the same, the wires C being thus brought parallel with the brace. It is desirable that the cords 7L shall be untied to permit this operation to take place. lVhen thus folded, the head-rest takes but little room and can be easily carried in the pocket or in a small hand-Satchel.

lVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

Afolding detachable head-rest for car-seats and the like, made of wire and comprising the following elements: a lower portion coinprising similar wires A, curved at their upper ends to the form of hooks, short extensions secured to said wires and projecting upward from each at about the point of curvature, a brace-rod joining the two wires at their hook portion and revolubly connected to each, wires C, having a hinged connection with the short wires and projecting upward therefrom and having sleeves thereon capable of moving over the hinged joint to render the same inflexible, a strip of flexible material looped upon the upward-extending 4o wires to extend between thein,and means for connecting the lower extremities of t-he wires A, whereby the wires C may be maintained in a distended condition, substantially as described.
