P I l UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..

WH EELED SCRAPER.
SPECIFICATION Aforming part of Letters Patent N0. 485,085, dated October 25, 1892.
Application tiled June 22, 1892. Serial No. 437.585. (No model.)
To otl whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER M. BRoADFooT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Decatur, in the county of Morgan and State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Vtheeled Scraper, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in wheeled Scrapers.
The object of the present invention is to provide a brace adapted to be applied to wheeled Scrapers to strengthen the same at the connection between the tongue and the scraper-frame and to prevent sagging at the rear of the tongue.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for holding the scoop in an elevated position for traveling.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a scraper constructed in accordance with this invention, the scoop being shown elevated. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, the scoop being shown in operative position. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
l designatesa longitudinally-disposed brace having its front end 2 secured to a tongue 3 and its rear end l connected to the inner ends 5 of transversely-disposed braces 6,which have their outer ends secured to the sides 7 ofa are arranged on the upper and lower faces of the tongue and serve to strengthen the same and are secured in place by the vertical bolt or rod 9 and by a bolt l2,`which secures the front end of the brace l to the tongue. The inclined braces l and 6 su pport and strengthen the rear end ot the tongue and scraper-frame and prevent sagging or breaking when th scraper is loaded.
The pivoted bar ll is provided with a hook l2 and is curved at 13 in advance of the hook and is provided with au integral rearwardlyd 6o dependinghandlelat. rlhehook12"isadapted tocngage a shoulder l5 of the scoop to hold the latter elevated when the scraper is being moved from one place to another. The front end 16 of the pivoted bar l1 is provided with 65 a half-turn and enlarged and adapted to engage the vertical rod 9 to maintain the pivoted bar in an inclined position.
The transverse braces 6 are constructed of a single pieceof rnetaLwhich is provided inter- 7o mediate its ends with a vertically-disposed rectangular bend to form the vertical ends 5 of the braces.
It will be seen that the manner of bracing the scraper is simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction and that the brace may be readily applied to any ordinary wheeled scraper.
The hook of the pivoted bar is automatic in its operation, and as soon as the scraper is 8o dumped it engages the stop and holds the body of the scraper in a posit-ion for traveling without requiring the assistance or attention' of the operator.
"What I claim isl. The combination, with a wheeled scraper, of the inclined longitudinal and transverse braces having their upper ends connected together and their lower ends secured, respectively, to the tongue and to opposite sides of 9o the scraper-frame, and the supporting-rod extending vertically fronl the tongue and passing through the longitudinal brace, substantiall y as described.
2. rlhe combination, withawheeled scraper, 95 of the inclined transverse braces constructed of a single piece of metal, having its ends secured to the sides of the scraperframe and provided intermediate its ends with a vertically-disposed bend, the longitudinal brace Ico having its ends bent horizontally, the front one being secured to the tongue and the rear one to the bend of the transverse braces, plates secured to the upper and lower faces of the tongue, and a vertical rod passing through the tongue and through the longitudinal brace, substantially as'described.
The Combination, with a two -Wheeled scraper, of inclined transverse braces constructed of a single piece of metal, having its ends secured to the sides of the scraper-frame and provided intermediate its ends with a vertical bend, a longitudinal brace extending upward from the tongue and having its rear end secured to the transverse braces at the bend, a vertical rod, and a bar pivoted'at its'front end in the bend of the transverse braces and provided at its rear end with a hook adapted to engage the scoop of the scraper to hold the same in an elevated position, substantially as and for the purpose described.V i '74. The combination, with atWo-Wheeled scraper, of inclined transverse braces constructed of a single piece of metal, having its Vend engaging the rod, whereby the bar is held in an inclined position, substantially as described. Y Y
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto'aiiixed my signature in lthe presence of two Witnesses.
PETER M. BRoADnoor.
