To aid whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN BAUERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore,
in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dumping-Wagons, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in coal-dumping wagons and carts, and it has for its object to provide special means for raising the wagon-body to a desired elevation and for discharging the coal at the rear end laterally at an angle to the body so that the wagon may have position on the street close to the sidewalk where it will not obstruct travel.
To this end my invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings,-Figure 1 is a side elevation of a dumping wagon embodying my invention, the body being shown in a lowered position and parts of the mechanism appearing in broken lines. Fig. 2 is also a side elevation but shows the wagon-body in an elevated position,- a portion of one side thereof being broken away to clearly show the parts seen in broken lines in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view of the wagon-body. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the chute head at the rear end of the wagon, and the Fig. 5 shows a view of the chute and the means for shiftingit,inapositionfordischargingthe coal straight out from the wagon-body. Fig. 6 is a similar view to Fig. 5, but shows the chute arranged to discharge the coal laterally at an angle to the wagon=body. Fig. 7 is a detail of the locking mechanism.
The letter, A, designates the wagon-body which is supported upon the bed-frame,b, in the usual manner and is of ordinary construciion except that it is provided at each side with a narrow compartment, C, having an opening, o, in its bottom along its entire length; this compartment is for the reception of certain parts of the wagon-elevating mechanism which project up from the bedframe, and the bottom opening afiords ample space for the free movement of said parts. A chute head, cl, from which the coal is discharged projects from therear end of the wagon-body.
I will now proceed to describe my improvements, first describing the parts at one side of the wagon-body.
The bed-frame, b, has a standard, f, at its rear end, and a link bar, g, has one end pivoted to this standard and its other end pivoted to the wagon-body within the compartment, 0. A lever, H, is irregularly curved, having a short straight upper part, h, pivoted to the link-bar, g, a curve, 71. and a relatively longer curved, rearwardly-bent lower portion, It, depends below the bed-frame when the wagon-body is in a lowered position and is immediately under the rear axle. To support the rear portion h, of the lever when the wagon-body is in this position I provide a short chaimi, which has one end attached to the bed-frame and its other end secured to the said lever. A chain, it, is secured by one of its ends to the lower end of the lever, H, and has its other end attached to the winding shaft, Z, of the wagon-body elevating mechanism; this mechanism comprises a large gear- Wheel, Z, fired on the shaft, Z, and meshing with a smaller gear wheel, 0, on a shaft which also has an intermediate gear-wheel, m, which latter meshes with a smaller pinion, p, on a shaft, p. In operation the gearing is actuated by a crank-arm, not shown, on the shaft,
13. When the crank is turned the lifting chain, It, will be wound up on the shaft, Z, thereby pulling on said lever, H, and raising the wagon-body. A pawl, s, engaging with a ratchet-wheel on the crankshaft, p, prevents any backward movement of the gearing when the wagon body is elevated.
To hold.the rear end of the wagon-body at any desired inclination after said body has been raised, a locking device is provided, said device comprising an arm, E, pivotally attached to the rear end of the bed-frame and projecting upward; a slotted arm, q,pendent from the side of the body, the slot, q, extending longitudinally ascrew'threaded bolt, 7', attached to the upper end of the arm, E, and projecting through the longitudinal slot; and a locking-handle, e, having a head, 2', provided with a screw-threaded hole to engage the threaded end of the said bolt, '1", on the opposite side of the slotted arm, g, from the arn1,E; by turning the locking-handle,e, in a desired direction the slotted arm will be clamped tightly between the arm, E, and

In Figs. 4, and 6, improved means are and shown for discharging the coal at a lateral I angle from the wagon-body. The central cross part of rod, I, engages the down-loop, til/ion the rod, F, thus the chute is supported immediately under the chute-head, cl, in position for dis charging coal straight out from: therear end of: thewagon-body, provided on its top edges with two cross-bars, w, or, to the former of which a bar, L, is pivoted at, 20'; said bar, L, near its outer end rests upon the cross-bar, as, and at its end is provided with a transverse rod, 20 formed integrally therewith; the bar, L, and its transverse rod together form a T-piece. A sheetiron apron,J, has two eyes, g, which take over the transverse rod, 10 loosely like a hinge so that the apron han gs and is free to swing back and forth; this apron is provided at each end with one or more holes, j, in which one of the hooks, z, e, on the chute engage, when the chute is arranged to discharge the coal at a lateral angle to the wagon-bod y.
Fig. 6 shows the position the chute, G, has with respect to the pivoted rod, F, when it is desired to discharge the coal into the chute pointed at a lateral angle from the wagonbody. In this position of the chute the apron, J, would hang on the front side or lower side of the chute in Fig. 6; or, in other words, said apron, J, in this operation would be hanging on the side where the hook, z, is located. When it is desired to discharge the coal at a lateral angle to the wagon-body, the pivoted rod, F, is shifted laterally on the rod, K, to a greater or less extent, according to the particular angle at which the discharge is to be to the desired position.

The elevating mechanism heretofore described has reference to itsattachment to one side only ot' the wagon-body; the other side has the sameelevating mechanism attached to it, except that the crank-arm and gear-= wheels are on one sideonly.

2. In a dumping wagon, the combination of the bed-frame; the wagon-bod y resting on the bed-frame and provided with side compartments; a standard on the rear end of the bedframe; a link bar pivotally connected at one end to said standard and at the other end to the wagon-body in the side compartment; a lever pivoted to the said link bar and depending therefrom; a chain connecting the lever and winding shaft; alocking device comprising an upright arm, E, pivoted to the rear end of the bed-frame; a pendent arm, q, attached to the wagon-body and having a longitudinal slot; a screw-bolt connecting the said upright arm and the pendent slotted arm; a locking handle turning on the screw-bolt for clamping the two arms together; and gearing conneoting with the winding shaft to elevate the wagon-body.
3. In a dumping Wagon, the combination of the bed-frame; the wagon-body resting on the bed-frame and provided with a chutevhead, d; a rod, F, pivoted by one end to the front end of the Wagon-body and at the under side thereof, and its other end having an inclination which forms a down-loop, a and an extremity, a, which is straight in line with the rod; a transverse sustaining rod, K, on the wagon-body on which the straight extremity of said pivoted rod rests and slides; a chute provided at each side with a hook, z, e, and at its end with a rod having two bent arms each attached to an opposite side of the chute and a central cross part, I, provided with an lip-curve, w; and an apron hanging from the chute-head and depending on the outer side of the chute.
4. In a dumping wagon, the combination of the bed-frame; the wagon-body resting on the bed-frame and provided with a chute-head, d; a rod, F, pivoted by one end to the front end of the wagon-body and at the under side thereof, and its other end having an inclination which forms a down-loop, a and an extremity, a, which is straight in line with the rod; a transverse sustaining rod, K, on the wagon-body on which the straight extremity of said pivoted rod rests and slides; a chute provided at each its end with a rod having two bent arms each attached to an opposite side of the chute and a central cross part, I, provided with an upcurve, '0'; a bar, L, pivoted to the chute-head and extending longitudinally thereto and having at its end a transverse rod, 10 and a hanging apron connected loosely to the said transverse rod and provided with one or more holes.
