BODY-WARM ER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 485,080, dated October 25, 1892.

Application filed December 4, 1891. Serial No. 414,030- (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE D. BAILY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spiceland, in the county of Henry and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Body-Warmers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to body-warmers, and has for its object to provide a simple means for supplying warmth to the body.

The invention is susceptible of various uses, but is designed chiefly for use in beds for warming the feet, spine, or other portions of the body.

The improvement consists of the novel fea tures and the peculiar construction and combination of the parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and which are shown in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of the invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the heatdistributer. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the flaring receiving end of the conductor. Fig. 4 shows a modification in which the lamp is supported within the said flaring receiving end of the conductor.

The heater or, of suitable shape, being prefably oblong and circular in form, is open on one side and provided with nipple h on the side opposite the said opening to receive a suitable conductor or pipe for conveying the heat from a lamp or other source of supply to the heater or distributer d. This conductor is of proper length to connect the source of heat-supply with the heat-distributer.

Inasmuch as a lamp e is generally used to supply the heat and is placed on the floor or low support, an elbow b is provided in and forms part of the conductor. A proper number of sections 0 are interposed between the elbow and the heat-distributer and the lamp. The flaring mouth (1 forms the receiving end of the conductor, and the guard g, located within the said mouth at, arrests any sparks that may rise from the lamp and prevents any back-draft extinguishing the flame and is preferably conical shaped. A space is formed between the guard gand the flaring mouth for the passage of the heated air. A deflector f is placed within the heater a, opposite nipple h, to diffuse the heat uniformly throughout the said heater. This deflector flares in opposite directions from a medial line or may be made plain or flat. The lamp 6 may be placed beneath the mouth 01, as shown in Fig. 1, or supported within the said mouth, as shown in Fig. at.

The parts comprising the heater will generally be formed from sheet metal. However, it is proposed to make them of asbestus material or fabric made from mineral wool, so that the structure will be light and may be folded into a compact form and carried in a grip or satchel.

The heater may be supported above the lamp in any desired manner, usually by resting the distributer or upon a convenient portion of the bed or upon aledge or other convenient support.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. A body-warmer comprising a heat-distributer, a lamp, a conductor to convey the heat from the lamp to the said heat-distributor and terminating in a flaring mouth, and an inverted-funnel-shaped guard closed at its upper end, supported within the said flaring mouth above the lower edge thereof and having its walls parallel with the walls of the said flaring mouth and having an annular space between the said parallel walls for the passage of the heated air, the said guard be ing adapted to receive the upper end of the lamp or lamp-chimney to prevent the flame being extinguished by back-draft through the said conductor and arrest any sparks, substantially as specified.

2. A heat-distributer having an approximately-cylindrical form, closed at its ends and open on one side and having a nipple projected from the closed side mid way of its ends to receive the heat-conductor and having a deflector located opposite the said nipple and flaring in opposite directions from a medial line, substantially as described.
