Description

Patented Oct. 25, 1892.
A. T. ALDRICH. COMBINED CAPE AND GAP.
(No Model.)
NYITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT T. ALDRICH, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
CO MBINED CAPE AND CAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 484,945, dated October 25, 1892. Application filed May 16, 1892. Serial No. 433,105. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT '1. ALDRICH, of the city and county of W'orcester, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Combined Cape and Cap for Bicycle- Riders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, in which' Figure 1 represents a side View of a mounted bicyclist provided with my said improved combined cape and cap, and Fig; 2 is a front view of the upper part thereof.
The object of my invention is to provide a combined cape and cap for the protection of bicyclists and their machinesin rainy weather; and it consists of a loose cape or cloak and cap attached thereto, made of suitable waterproof material and having an opening in front for the face and to admit of the cape being slipped on the wearer, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order that others may better understand the nature and purpose of my invention, I will now proceed to describe it more in detail.
In the drawings, A represents the bicycle, upon which is mounted the rider B, and O is my improved waterproof combined cape and cap, which is made without sleeves or side openings of rubber cloth or other material that is impervious to water. It may be composed of any desired number of pieces required to produce the proper shape for enveloping the rider and machine, as shown, without interfering with the operation of the latter. In this instance I have shown the back of the cape made in one piece a and the front of another piece b, with a slit or opening at the top, provided with bound edges and buttons and holes I). for fastening and unfastening the edges at each side of said slit.
Each side of the cape consists of a large gorepiece 0 and two small gores d e. Said parts which constitute the cape portion of the garment are extended up at f around the neck and connect with the cap g, which is preferably provided with a suitable visor h. By the use of a waterproof garment thus made it is obvious that when fitted over the rider on a bicycle said rider, except his face, as well as the driving parts of the bicycle, are perfectly protected from the rain, even in a beating storm, and I find in practice that the garment may be worn with but little (if any) discomfort or inconvenience in operating the machine. It may be folded up into a very small compass, similar to an ordinary gossamer waterproof, and may therefore be carried without trouble to the rider, who is thereby always prepared against stormy weather.
My invention is of special advantage in taking long trips, when oftentimes proper shelter cannot be readily obtained, and said invention is believed to meet a long-felt want, and, being produced at small expense, comes within the reach of all requiring such a garment.
Having now described .said invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A combined cape and cap comprising a sleeveless cape close-fitting at the shoulder portions and having wide flaring skirts and a placket-opening in front, and a neck portion secured to the upper edge of the cape and provided with a front opening forming a continuation of the placket-opening in the cape, and a cap secured to the neck portion, substantially as set forth.
ALBERT T. ALDRICH.
