APPARATUS FOR BORING ARTESIAN WELLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 484,764, dated October 18, 1892.

To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN WINoHEs'rEE ELDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Boring Artesian Wells; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in apparatus for boringArtesian Wellsiin a sandy, ferruginous, or caving soil, and its novelty will be fully understood from the following description and claims, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings; and the objects of my invention are to enable a well to be driven to any desired depth and obviate all difficulties arising from caving of soil against the pipe. I attain these objects in the manner set forth herein.
Heretofore the water placed within a pipe, tube, or casing in boring an Artesian Well and forced or iiowing down same escapes at the bottom, and returns laden with the spoil or excavated matter on the outside of the tube or pipe to the surface, and the tube or pipe gradually descends; but it is frequently the case that after a pipe or tube has been extended some distance down the material through which it has passed will cave against the pipe, and thus arrests the progress of the spoil-laden water returning to the surface, causing a precipitation on account` of stoppage of flow, and further progress is impeded temporarily, if not permanently.
To carry my invention into effect, I allow a portion of the descending water in pipe or tube to escape at intermediate points through openings in pipe or tube provided for this specific plirpose, said openings not being sufficient to drain the pipe or tube to such an extent as to affect its usefulness or reduce to any great extent the pressure or flow of water through the lower or bottom opening of pipe or tube. By the application of water in this manner thejprocess of boring an Artesian well is rendered continuous. The caving material will in no manner affect the progress of sinking or rotating the pipe or tube, as the exterior surface of the pipe or tube will at all times be surrounded by a film of water flowing upward and carrying with it the caving and excavated material.
For the better understanding of my invention I have represented in the accompanying drawings a pipe made in accordance with my invention.

Having described my invention and the manner in which the same is or may be carried into effect, I would say in conclusion that I do not limit myself to the precise details herein described in illustration of my invention, as the same may be varied to some extent; but
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A pipe-section provided with a recess in the end edge and a groove extending for some distance along the exterior surface to carry off the water and excavated matter, substantially as specified.
2. A pipe-section having a recessed edge and a longitudinal groove, in combination with a second section having a coupling, the groove in the first section extending above the coupling, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
