Description

W. A. HUELSDONK.
DRILLING RIG.
APPLlCATlON FILED JAN. 27. 1914.
Patented July 6,:1915.
IN VEN TORI. Mf/iaizzA/Eae/rdmfi BY I WITNESSES A; HUELSDONK, OF LE GRAND,CALIFORNIA DRILLING-RIG To all whom it may concern .1, Be it known that 1', WILLIAM A. HUELS- pONK, a citizen of the United States, resid use the same, reference being had to the eccompanying drawings, and to the characters reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application. This invention relates to improvements in riggingand paraphernaliaused for boring wells, the object of the invention -being-to produce a drill capable of a reciprocating motion and at the same time having a means foriextendingit la-teraily forthe purpose of removing sand' in large quantities from water bearing sand strata in 'order to allow the drill without the a large clean rea for the inflow of the water to he raised from thewell after the drilling operation is finished""or for the purpose of clearing the same 01ft of the path of the drill during-the drilling operation.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will he exceedingly eflective for the purposes for which it is .esigned.
These objects, I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of of the. following specification and claims. On the drawings, similar characters of reference'indioate corresponding parts in k the several views.
1 Figure 1 is a sectional view showing the outline of the well and sand strata with my improved drill in position-therein. v Fig.2 is a sectional View 0 the Vertical portion of ien capable of extending laterally thereo Fig. 3 is an end view of the subject matter shown in Fig. 2.
- Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference I numeral 1 designates thewell and the numeral2 designates the station pi e adapted to be'projeoted therein and a ddrd to by suitable sections as creases.

tion pipe 2 is open. On the lower end of the "sleeve 3 are the digging drills 4 of any suitable type. A cable '5 is provided with branches 6'Which connect with the lower end of the sleeve?) for the purpose lowering such sleeve to cause perform their functions. Thus with the movement of the walking beam, not shown the member 3 is raised and lowered to intermittently raise and the bottom of the well thus particles of dirt or rock. Such particles, together with the Water which is in the bottom of the well, is then worked 31p through the suction pipe 2 and discharged at any sultable point, fresh water being'run into the well in anysuitable manner.
of raising and the drills 4 to drop the members 4 into breaking off hen, during the drilling operation, a
stratum of water bearing sand 7 is encountered and it is necessary to remove a portion of said sand before the well can be further proceeded with, I provide a means consists in the-use of the ture, namely :1 remove the supports the drills 4 and to the member 3 and clamponto the .3 a fiexible li'ose 8 having suitable digging points 9 secured on the end thereof endifitg ting over which is a guard or hood 10; A cable 6 is then connected with the sleeve 3 and a cablel'i is connected "Withthe hood 10. When it is desired to withdraw a quantity of sand *from the ,Water bearing stratum 7, the suction pipe 2 carrying the flexible hose 8 is lowered to a point near the bottom of the following strucportion 49?, which member which is threa ded for doing this in an effective manner which I well-and then bycpullingon the cable 6 the end of the flexible hose 8 maybe pulled into by means of the suction pump to such an eX- tent as may be desired. The well may then be further dug without danger of the sand caving into thesame and also for a flow of water if it is desiredto pump the same from suchfstratum. i
From the readily be, y on that I have produe'ed such a device as substantially fulfils the objedts 'of "the invention as setiforth herein. I
' l/Vhile this specification sets forth in detail-v the present and; preferred construction .of the device, still in practice, fromsuch detail maybe resorted to as do "not form a departure from thespirit of the such" deviations foregoing description' it Willi nvention as defined by the appended claims,
Having thus described my invention What I claim as new and useful and desire to secureby Letters Patent is 1. A device of the character described com- 5 prising the combination of e suction pipe,
a tubnlaemember sliclable over the end. of
uch suction pipe, a flexible memberm the lower end of said tubular member, one (ligging points mounted on the end of said flexi} 10 ble member, as .describecl.
2. A device of the character described comprising; the combination of ,asuction pipe, a tubular member sliolable thereovei', inflexible member on the lower end of said tubular 15 member, e cable member-connected with said
