SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 484,709, dated October 18, 1.892.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEROLT GIBSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at-St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Locks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved lock for window-sashes; and it has for its object to provide more especially for the automatic locking of the upper sash and secure the same against being jarred open to any extent and to prevent rattlingpf the sashes; and to these ends the invention consists in the employment of certain devices adapted, as the upper sash is pushed or shoved to its closed position or the top of the window-casing, to effectually and automatically lock the upper sash and simultaneously draw the sashes toward each other and against the dividingbead, all substantially .as hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side View of my improved sash-lock, showing it applied for use. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are views showing the several members of my sash-lock. Fig. 5 is a broken perspective view of the member fixed to the casing, showing the beveled bottom edge f of the slot 0. In carrying out my invention I employ three parts or members A, B, and O, the member A being applied to the window-casing, the member B to the face of the upper sash, and the member 0 t0 the top of the lower sash, in the present instance the member A being adapted to be placed astride of the dividing-bead of the sashes just above the meeting-rail of the lower sash.
The member A, besides its bracket or foot a, affording means for its attachment by screws or other suitable fastenings to the windowcasing, has a bifurcated arm b, integral with and offset from said bracket, providing a slot 0 between them. Between the upper ends of the side pieces of the bifurcated armbis hung or pivoted at its upper end a latch c',having at its lower end a projection 0 beveled, or rather more nearly concave, so as to slope downward and outward, and yet slightly curve upward at its salient edge or point to effectually lift the upper sash into its closed position as said latch engages the member B, as more fully described hereinafter. The lower edge of the projection o is rounded, having a general upward and outward inclination. At its extreme lowest end the latch c has a stop or projection 0 adapted to engage a shoulder upon the outer bottom edge of the space between the side pieces of the arm b, within which said latch swings to arrest or limit the outward movement of the latch.
The arm or casting b has projecting from its bottom or lower end a beveled catch 01, and directly opposite the inner beveled side of said catch said end of the arm is provided with a plain-sided stop d, slightly spaced off therefrom, thus providing a socket d" therebetween, said catch and stop being set inward from said end of the arm, leaving a shoulder d thereat.
The member B has at its upper end a forwardly-projecting stud 6, having a beveled edge to engage the somewhat-slightly-concave edge and the projection o of the latch c, and at its inner lower end said member has a concave and plain-sided stud 6, adapted to enter the socket d of the member A, the concavity of the stud engaging the convexity of the catch d, while the plain-sided surface thereof engages the adjacent side of the stop 01. The concave and plain-sided stud e is arranged at the inner bottom edge of the body portion of the member B and faces in a direction at right angles to that in which the stud e faces, said stud e having, also, connection at its closed outer side with the inner edge of said body portion of the member B by a thickened portion or end piece e adapted to engage the shoulder 61 of the arm I), strengthening the same at that point.
The member 0 is in the form of a hook, having its upper horizontal portion provided with a tooth said horizontal portion being received into the slot 0 of the member A, and said tooth entering the space between the side pieces of the bifurcated arm I), just in rear of the latch c, to lock the latter into engagement with the upper stud e of the member B.

Assuming that the upper sash is open and it is desired to close and lock the same, the stud e of the member B, it will be seen, as the upper sash is shoved or pushed upward will pass or escape by the inwardly-yielding latch c, and after such passage of the stud the latch will return by the action of gravity to its formerposition,permittingitsprojection c topass under said stud. The horizontal arm of the member 0 will then enter the slotcof the member A and, through the action of its tooth engaging the latch, force the latch into such position as to cause the projection c to engage at its upper edge the bottom edge of the stud e, the action of which, it is obvious,
will cause the stud e to ride upward thereon and thus secure the automatic and efiectual closing of the upper sash and firmly hold it against being jarred down to any extent. The coming together or engagement of the concave stud e and catch at and the wedging action of the hook upon the member A, bringing the meeting-rails of the sashes close together, have the effect to. prevent the rattling of the sashes from the action of the wind or other cause.
It will be understood that I do not make claim in this application to subject-matter claimed in my application filed October 10, 1891, Serial No. 400,801, viz:
The combination of a member fixed to the casing and having a latch hung in an oifset arm of said member, a slot in rear of said ofiset arm, a member fixed to the upper sash, having a stud to engage said latch, and a member fixed to the lower sash, having a hook to enter said slot and interlock the latch of the membersecured to the casing with the stud of the upper sash member.
Nor do I make claim to subjectmatter claimed in my application filed March 10, 1892, Serial No. 424,392,viz:
The combination of a member fixed to the casing, having an offset arm provided with a hook and a slot in rear of said arm and said arm having a latch whose forward end is adapted to stand at the entrance to the space between said arm and hook, a member fixed to the upper sash and having a stud to engage that portion of said latch at the entrance of said space, and a member fixed to the lower sash to enter the slot of the member fixed to the casing and to engage said latch with the stud of the member fixed to the upper sash.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is-
1. A sash-lock having one member pro-' vided with a latch and in rear of said latch with a slot having an inner beveled bottom edge, a second member having a beveled stud, and a third member having its hook portion provided with a tooth having a beveled surface, said member also having opposite the beveled sn rface of said hook a plain offset portion, substantially as specified.
2. A sash-lock having one member provided with a latch, a beveled catch cl, and a step d, spaced 0E from said catch, a second member having a beveled stud e, and a concave stud e, adapted to engage said beveled catch and be received between it and said stop, and means to effect engagement between the latch and said beveled stud, substantially as specified.
