COVER FOR SHOES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 484,705, dated October 18, 1892.

Application filed April 21, 1892. Serial No.430,025. (No modell Patented in England February 22, 1892, No. 3,406.

To all whom it may concern.-

Beit known that I, JOHN FAVETS, merchant, asubject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Corn Exchange Avenue, Seething Lane, in the city of London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mud Protectors or Guards, (for which I have obtained a patent in Great Britain, No. 3,406, bearing date February 22, 1892,) of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to manufacture mud protectors or guards in such a manner that they will prevent the lower parts of gentlemens trousers and of ladies garments becoming soiled by mud or dust when the wearer is walking; and in order that this invention may be particularly described and ascertained, reference is hereby made to the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of referenceindicate corresponding parts.

Figure 1 is a side view of my improved mud protector or guard. Fig; 2 illustrates the application of the guard to a ladys boot, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view of the same.

a is theguard, which is made, preferably, of cloth, and partly or wholly lined with leather or other suitable material when required. The guard is formed to a shape and size so as to cover the rear part of the boot or shoe 1) from the level of the heel, and the upper part thereof is extended forward so as to completely encircle the'leg when buttoned, as shown in the drawings, or otherwise suitably fastened as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.

d is a band of elastic or other suitable material, the ends of which are attached in any suitable manner to the sides of the guard a, as shown in the drawings, the object of this band being to embrace the heel, and thereby retain the guard in position close to the back of the heel. A band f is permanently secured at one end to the upper portion 0 of the guard, and at its other end is provided with a button for engaging buttonholes, which band passes under the sole of the boot or shoe and prevents the guard becoming displaced.

I claim-w The hereindescribed improved mud protector or guard for attachment to boots or shoes, said protector or guard having an open bottom and consisting of a portion to cover and fit closely to the rear of the bootor shoe, means for securing the upper part thereof to the wearer above the ankle, a strap d, connected to the edges of the guard or protector below the ankle, said strap engaging the front portion of the heel of the boot or shoe, and astrapf, secured to said guard or protector at a point intermediate the strap d, and

the means for securing the protector or guard to the wearer above the ankle, substantially as described.
