Description

(No Model.)
0. E. WINTRODE. ADJUSTABLE WIRE TWISTING WRENCH.
No. 484,692. Patented Oct. 18', 1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES E. WINTRODE, OF HUNTINGTON, INDIANA.
ADJUSTABLE WIRE-TWISTING WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters .Patent No. 484,692, dated October 18, 1892.
Application filed June 8,1892. Serial No. 435,995. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES E. WINTRODE, of Huntington, in the county of Huntington and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire-Twisting Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact description of the inventiomsuch as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in wire-twisting wrenches, and which is intended as an improvement upon a patent granted to me Febuary 9, 1892, No. 468,718; and it consists in certain novel features of construction which will be fully described hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The object of my present invention is to provide the plates between which the jaws are secured with radial slots, into which pins or projections at the inner ends of the jaws extend, and the jaws at their outer portions with slots which are in a line with the slots of the plate and through which clamping bolts pass, whereby the jaws can be moved outward from the center of the plates and from each other for the purpose of adjusting them for different thicknesses of wire or to place them nearer together as they wear without the tendency to effect the adjustment when being operated, as is the case with the twister illustrated and described in the abovementioned patent.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a twister which embodies my invention. Fig. 2 is a detached view of one of the plates having arms. Fig. 3 is a detached View of one of the jaws and handles.
A indicates two plates which are provided with three radially extending arms 13, as shown, and these plates are each proyided with the three slots 0, which extend radially therefrom. The outer ends of each of the arms of the plates are provided with transverse bolt-holes D, through which the clamping-bolts E pass.
The jaws of this tool consist of the portions F, which have their inner ends made angular,
as shown, and projecting from these portions Fare the handles G. Extending laterally from the inner ends of thesejaws F are the pins or projections H, which extend into the slots 0. Made in the outer-portions of the parts F are the slots I, which register with the openings or holes D and through which the clampingbolts also pass.
By means of the above construction the jaws can be adjusted nearer to or farther from the center of the plates, and also in relation to each other, whereby the openings or slots K between the adjacent edges of the jaws can be regulated to suit wires of different thicknesses, and also to take up wear. By this arrangement the jaws are not pivoted and are not, therefore, liable to be disturbed in their adjustment by the twisting or turning movement given thereto when twisting the wires, as is the case with the construction shown in the patent herein named.
While I show projections II at the inner ends of the jaws, which project into slots 0, formed in the plates, this construction may be reversed, as will be understood, or bolts can be substituted therefor, or the slots can be made in the jaws instead of in the plates without departing from the spirit of my invention. So, also, both slots may be made in the vplates or both may be made in the jaws. In either case the operation and result will be the same, the object being to make the jaws radially adjustable in relation to the plates, which will regulate the distance between the adj acent edges of the jaws.
While I here describe and show two plates and prefer to use two, yet it will be understood that a single plate could be used to which the jaws would be secured adj ustably, as will be understood, without materially affecting or departing from my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A wire-twister consisting of a plate, radially-sliding jaws having angular inner ends, the plate and jaws having, respectively, radial slots, and clamping-bolts and guides for the said jaws, substantially as described.
2. A wire-twister consisting of a plate provided with radial slots and bolt-holes, jaws having angular inner ends and provided with projections entering the said radial slots and radial slots registering with the said plate bolt holes, and clamping bolts passing through said bolt-holes and the registering slots, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES E. WINTRODE. Witnesses:
