UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
HATTEN GASKINS, OF MORRISONVILLE, ILLINOIS.
PUMP.
- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 484,496, dated October 18, 1892.
tpplication filed July 9, 1891. Serial No. 398,953. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HATTEN GASKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Morrisonville, in the county of Christian and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Pump, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pumps; and it has for its object to provide an attachment for windmill-pumps for the purpose of guiding the pump-rod and the water, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figurel is a perspective View of a device constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig.3 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures.
l designates a casting, which is provided with a central vertical perforation or opening 2, forming a passage for the pump-rod 3. The lower end of the opening 2 is screw-threaded for the reception of the pipe 4, which is connected with the pump-cylinder, and at the upper end at the opening 2 is fitted a packingbox 5 for the passage of the pump-rod.
6 6 designate curved passages, which diverge upwardly and outwardly from the lower end of the central opening 2, said passages terminating at the ends of the block or casting, where they are screw-threaded for the reception of the pipes 7. \Vhen it is desired to discharge water at one side only, one of the passages 6 may be closed by means of a suitable plug or stopper. The upper side of the block or castingis provided with a screwthreaded recess 8, in which is fitted an upright 9, at the upper end of which is pivoted a lever 10, by means of which the pump-rod, which is pivotally connected with said lever, may be operated either by hand or by a windmill or other power.
My improved attachment may be arranged at the top of the well or in the well, the block or casting being preferably connected with a suitable cross-bar, by means of which it is sustained in position for operation. It forms a conduit or guide for the water. It may be also noted that the casting having the passages indicated does away entirely with the use of joints and connections, and thereby greatly prolongs the utility of the device, which may be removed from place to place and used in any location desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States In a pump, the combination of a casting having a central vertical opening entirely through the same and opposite separate independen t diverging discharge-passages lead ing in a curved line from the lower end of said vertical opening to the opposite sides of the block, a packing-box fitted in the upper end of said central opening, the pump-rod extending through said opening, the uprights seated in said block, and an operating-lever pivoted to said upright and connected with said pump-rod, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
HAT'lEN GASKINS.
