UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN B. POWELL AND MARY C. PONVELL, OF PARKER, SOUTH DAKOTA.
COMBINED CHART AND BLACKBOARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 484,338, dated October 11, 1892.
Application filed February 29, 1892. Serial No. 423,276. (No model.)
To all whom, it nuty concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN B. POWELL and MARY O. POWELL, citizens of the United States, and residents of Parker, in the county of 'lurner and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Chart and Blackboard; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is an elevation of one side of the device. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the other side. Fig. 3 is a modified form.
This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in educational appliances; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter specified.
The invention more particularly relates to a combination blackboard and chart device designed for use in schools of all characters and in other places as an aid to instruction in any particular branch or branches.
In the accompanying drawings the letter A designates the base, having feet a, which are usually provided with casters in order to facilitate the moving of the device from place to place and into the desired position. Rising from each end portion of the base are uprights or posts B B.
C designates a rectangular frame having bearings in its lateral edges at the central portion thereof, which are loosely engaged by pivot-studs c in the posts B B, whereby the said frame is capable of a free swinging movement between said posts. The studs 0 are preferably small thumb or set screws, which may be brought into sufficient'engagement with the hearings to support the frame at any desired angle for facilitating the exposure of the matter upon the chart and blackboard, now to be described.
D designates the blackboard, which is secured firmly to one side of the frame 0, and consists of a rigid back having a blackboard surface.
E designates the chart, which consists of a single elongated piece of broad web or ribbon of flexible material, on which is printed or stamped any kind of educational matter, such as maps, diagrams, phonetic and grammatical exercises, anatomical figures, 850. This web or ribbon is carried by vertical rollers F F-one at each end, and journaled 6o loosely in the frame at their ends. The upper end of each roller carries a crank f, by the operation of which the web or ribbon forming the chart may be turned to expose the desired part of its surface. The movement of the rollers F F is properly retarded by means of spring-pressed brakes g, pressing against their upper portions. v
The chart may be tacked to the rolls at its ends, or said rolls may each be formed in two sections, between which the ends are clamped.
By the latter construction the chart may be removed and a new one substituted without removing the rolls from the frame.
When the device is designed for use in kin- 7 dergarten and primary departments, a series of parallel wires or rods I-I may be supported between the posts B B above the blackboard and chart, and on which may be arranged to slide a number of beads hand blocks h, illus- 8/ trating geometrical figures. ,1
In Fig. 3 we have shown the posts B B as having a greater vertical extension and formed with ways or grooves 70, as indicated by the dotted lines, in which the frame 0 may be slid vertically to bring it at difierent heights. The adjustment may be secured by set-screws 71').
In the construction first described the frame 0 may be entirely inverted on its bearings to expose either the chart or the blackboard, as may be desired.
Having described this invention, What We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In an educational device, the combination, with the movable supporting-frame having the upright posts 13 B, of a rectangular reversihle frame 0, adj ustably supported between In testimony whereof we affix our signatures said posts, the rollers journaled one near each in presence of two witnesses.
vertical edge of said frame, the cranks f on JOHN B. POWELL.
the upper ends of said rollers, the spring- MARY C. POWELL. 5 pressed brakes g g, acting against the upper Witnesses:
portions of said rollers, and the chart carried W. A. HOUTS,
by said rollers, substantially as specified. C. BpELOE,
