DEVICE FOR APPLYING HOSE-CLAMPS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 484,298, dated October 11, 1892. Application filed February 2, 1892- Serial No. 420.122. (N model.)-

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, ZEBULON L. CHAD- BOURNE and EDWARD A. BEHRINGER, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, State of New York, and HENRY J. MCCOY, of Orange, in the county of Essex, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Attaching Hose to Couplings; and we do hereby declare that [O the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

Our invention relates to improvements in devices for tightening and clasping the fastening or clamping bands used for securing hose to hose-couplings.

In a concurrent application, we have described and claimed an improved metallic band for securing hose to couplings. The present application has for its objectto provide an improved pair of pliers by which said band is tightened and clamped in place.

The invention consists in the novel construction hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a View of a metallic fastening-band with which our invention is adapted for use. Fig. 2 is an elevation of a section of hose, showing the band -in two positions. Fig. 3 is a Side view of a pair of pliers constructed according to the present invention. Fig. lisa perspective View showing the pliers in the act of securing the band inplace.

In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 denotes a flexible hose, and 2 the hollow 4o metallic coupling insertedin the end thereof,

as usual.

The numeral 3 designates the securing-band, consisting of a strip of flexible metal having shouldered heads 4 at each end and near one end provided with an enlargement 5, having an elongated slot 6.

The pliers consist of two arms 7, fulcrumed or pivoted together at 8, forming two gripping arms or jaws 9 and 10, one of which is longer than the other. Each of these arms or jaws at its end is formed or provided with two outwardly-projecting lugs with an inter mediate slot or recess.

The operation is as follows: The band is bent around the hose at the point of connection with the coupling and one of the headed ends is passed through the slot 6, as shown in Fig. 2. The lugs of the short arm or jaw 9 of the pliers are then engaged with the shouldered head of the end of the band near to the slot and the lugs on the long arm engaged with the opposite head. By now pulling the legs together the band will be tightly clasped around the hose, and thereby using the pliers as a lever, with the short arm as a fulcrum, the head, passing through slot 6, can be bent down upon the opposite head and the band thus securely clamped and prevented from loosening.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim is- A pair of pliers for tightening and clamping bands for hose-couplings, consisting of the pivoted legs forming jaws and handles, each of said jaws being formed with two outwardly-projecting lugs and an intermediate slot, substantially as described.
