Be it known that LWESLEY M. DAvnNron'r, a citizen of the United States, residi at lfillgin, in the county of Kane and tate of Illinois, have invented a. new and useful improvement in Hose Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved construction of hose clam consisting of wires substantially paral cl relation passing around the hose to be clamped engaged at end by a first head and at the other end by a second head and a clamping screw extending between the heads. The device is constructed in a manner requiring the wires in their clamping position to pass each head to reach the other head and thus movement of the screw between the heads in a direction to force the heads away from each other exerts a clamping tension on the wires and securely clamps the hose to the pipe end that it inserted in the end of the hose. By my construction I encircle the hose by the clamping wires somewhat more than the complete circumference of the hose and thus avoid the possibility of buckling or folding the hose at the location of the clamping heads in a direction tending to lift or move it from the surface of the pipe against which the hose is to be clamped, which is, apt to occur with devices heretofore used in which the heads connected with the clamping band or hands are forced together to secure the clamping action and in which the clamping band or bands do not quite encircle the complete circumference of the hose. By my .lnvention I also provide a convenient construction by which the clamping wires are securely held in a permanent manner by one of the heads andby which the engage ment of the wires with the other head may.

By my inventionl also provide convenient markings on the wires to facilitate clamping them to one of the heads with equal lengths of the wires between the heads depending upon the size of hose to be clamped, which insures placing substantially the same clamping action upon each wire and the most eflective operation of the heads during the clamping action.
The above and further objects of my invention will best be understood by reference 60 to the accompanying drawings showing a preferred embodiment thereof in which Fig. 1 shows my improved clamping device in plan view in place upon a hose to be clamped,

As shownin Fig. 3 the clamp consists of a first head 10 through which the mid-portion of a wire 11 extends. said wire being bent it: at its mid-portion and passing through suitable receiving holes therefor in the head 10. The head 10 is preferably made by stampin and forming operations from sheet metfi and consists of a central channel construcso tion l0 from one edge of which a flange 10 is formed extending at substantially right angles with the adjacent wall of the channel and substantially parallel with the parts 11 and 11 of the wire, to form a surface for $5 engaging the hose and prevent cutting of the same. The wall of the channel adjacent the flange 10 has formed therethrough a clearance hole 10 for receiving the end of the clamping screw 12 which passes through to the channel portion 10 so that its end rests against the inner face of the other wall of the channel immediately under the folded portion of the wire 11. In this manner a socket is formed for the end of the screw as which. retains the head 10 is place on the screw and the clamping action or the screw is exerted directly on that portion of the head engaging the wire so that the possibility of bending the head b the clamping ice action of the screw is avoi ed. The flange 14' has preferably formed in its outer edge notches 14 to receive the bent portions of the wires and prevent displacement of them relatively to the head 14 when the wire portions are bent to secure them to the head 14. Itwill be understood that while for convenience I form the wire portions 11 and 11 from a single piece of wire extending through the hea 10 and folded at 11, the portions 11 and 11 may be separate from each other if preferred and mdividually secured to the head 10.
The outer wall of the channel portion 14 of the head 14 is provided with holes 14 therethrough for the passage of the wire portions 11 and 11 and the opposite wall of said channel portion is cut away ad acent said wire portions so that its inner edge 15 just clear of said wire portions as they pass through the head 14. To facilitate taking the wire portions of the same length between the heads 10 and 14 in securing the wire portions 11 and 11 to the head 14, prefer to place markings 15 on the wires similarly spaced from the head 10 so that when the clamp is in use, substantially equal tension may be exerted upon the Wire portions and the heads ma occupy a substantial parallel position in c amping the hose engaged by the wires.
In placin the clamp upon the hose as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the heads 10 and 14 are separated a sufficient amount so that when the wires are wrapped around the hose the heads will occupy the position and relation indicated in Figs. 1 and 2 with the head 10 lyin between the end ortions of the wires to %e secured to the head 14 and the head 14 extending over the wires adjacent to the head 10. The screw 12 is of course in its outermost position in the head 14 at this time and the desired length of wires is determined and then by means of markings 15 the position of the edge of the flange 14 on the wires may be determined. The device is then preferably removed from the hose to secure the head 14 to the wires although if desired this may be done in place on the hose, and the wires are bent around the edge of the flange 14 in the notches 14 and under the end portions of the channel portion 14 of the head and then a ain bent adjacent the inner wall of the c annel portion of the head over the wire extending therefrom, thus securely fastening the end portions of the wires to the head 14. With the clamp in substantially the position indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, the screw 12 is turned to separate the heads 10 and 14 and by placing tension on the wires firmly compresses the hose against the pipe end contained within the hose. For convenience in Figs. 1 and 2 the pipe against which the hose is to be clamped is not shown since the general nature of clamping devices of this kind is understood and the hose itself is indicated at 16. It Will be observed that the portions of the wires immediately adjacent the head 10 exert a clamping action on a hose under the head 14 adjacent the flange 14 and that the portions of the wires adjacent the head 14 exert a clamping action on the hose adjacent the flange 10 of the head 10 and that the clamping action is uniformly exerted by the wires around the entire circumference of, the hose. Depending upon the degree of separation of the heads 10 and 14, this clamping action may be extended around the entire circumference of the hose or even a somewhat greater amount and thus any tendency of the hose to buckle at the heads is avoided. The position of the clamping heads shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is preferably that assumed on placing the clamp in position before beginning the clamping action, and since each wire operates upon the hose independently of the other wire it will be observed that the entire circumference of the hose is clamped at two different places thus securing very effective clamping action. It Will further be observed that the screw 12 extends through the mid portion of the head 14 and engages the mid portion of the head 10, as a result of which, if for any reason the wires are of slightl different length between the heads, the head 10 will operate as an evener and cause substantially the same tension on each wire. Furthermore after the clamp has been used with any particular hose it will be understood that if it is necessary to undo the clamped joint, by releasing the screw 12 the clamp may beremoved from the hose and again used with the same size hose just as effectively as in the first instance. I
In carrying out my invention I find it advantageous to use wires having a circular cross section since they slip more readily on the surface of the hose in tightening the clamp than they would if of flat cross section, but I do not limit myself in carrying out my invention to wires or bands of any particular cross section. It will also be observed that my improved clamp, while particularly adapted for use with rubber hose, may also be employed in connection with any tubular structure as a clamping means where the material is sufliciently soft to yield to the clamping action described, as for example soft copper pipe. In the fol lowing claims therefore in using the term wires as a part of the clamp construction I include within the meaning of the term, wire or band of any form of cross section that may be used in connection with my in) proved clamping device and in using the term hose in the claims I use it in the sense of any pipe or hose structure of a nature permitting compression by means of my in proved clamping device. It will also be understood that I do not limit myself to the particular form of clamping screw described, as the entire function of said screw is to separate the heads 10 and 14 in using the clamp and any arrangement or disposition of screw that will secure this result is included within the scope of my invention.
While I have shown my invention in the particular embodiment above described it will be understood that I do not limit myself to this exact construction as I may employ equivalents known to the art at the time of the filing of this application without departing from the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a hose clamp, the combination of a first head, wires extending from said first head for encircling a hose to be clamped and passing said first head to engage a second head, a second head for engaging and retaining the ends of said wires, and a screw extending through one of said heads to engage and exert a thrust upon the other of said heads, whereby tightening said screw separates said heads and exerts a clamping action by said wires on the hose, said second head having wire guideways and retaining edges for receiving said wire ends and bend ing them into retaining joints to prevent said wires slipping in said second head.
2. In a hose clamp v the combination of a first head, wires extending from said first head for encircling a hose to be clamped and passing said first head to engage a second ead, a second head for engaging and retaining the ends of said wires, and a screw extending through one of said heads to engage and exert a thrust upon the other of said heads, whereby tightening said screw sepa rates said heads and exerts a clampmg action by said wires on the hose, said wires having similar markings on them to facilitate securing equal lengths of said wires between said heads around the hose.
3. In a hose clamp, the combination of a first head, wires extending from said first head for encircling a hose to be clamped and passing said first head to engage a second ead, a second head for engaging and retaining the ends of said wires, and a screw extending through one of said heads to engage and exert a thrust upon the other of said heads, whereby tightening said screw separates said heads and exerts a clamping action by said wires on the hose, said second head having wire guideways and retaining edges for receiving said wire ends and bending them into retaining joints to prevent said wires slipping in said second head, and said wires having similar markings on them to facilitate securing equal lengths ofsaid wires between said heads around the hose.
4. In a hose clamp, the combination of two clamping members, wires extending from one of said members and engaged in fixed relation thereby, the other of" said members being conformed to engage and retain said wires at any desired distance from said one member, and a device for forcibl moving said members relatively to each other to place a clamping tension on said wires, said other member having a projecting edge for engaging bends in said wires to hold them against the clamping action upon them.
5. In a hose clamp, the combination of two clamping members, wires extending from one of said members and engaged in fixed relation thereby, the other of said members being conformed to engage and retain said wires at any desired distance from said one member, and a device for forcibly moving said members relatively to each other to place a clamping tension on said wires, said wires havin markings on them equally spaced from said one member.
6. In a hose clamp, the combination of a first head, wires extending from said first head for encircling a hose to be clamped and passing said first head to engage a second head, a second head for engaging and retaining the ends of said wires, and a screw extending through one of said heads to engage and exert a tirust upon the other of said heads, whereb tightening said screw sepia rates said hea s and exerts a clamping action by said wires on the hose, one of said heads having a projecting edge for engaging sharp bends in said wires to hold them in desired position on said head.
