UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARY KATE STAAB, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
DRESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 484,257, dated October 11, 1892.
Application filed August 22, 1889- Serial No. 321,652. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, MARY KATE STAAB, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and
Vin the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dresses; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to dresses and will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front View of my improved dress as it appears when on the person. Fig. 2 is aside view. Fig. 3 is a rear view; Fig. 4, a detail and Eig. 5 a broken front view of the body.
The dress portion A consists of two rectanguiar pieces, which are sewed together' at the sides, leaving openings B for the arms, and in front the dress is looped up by stitches `ct, which connect it to the bodice, which permits the front b to fall over the main portion in a fold A and away from the upper portion of the bodice C, which is the only part of my improved dress that conforms to the shape of the ligure. This bodice, which is shown in Fig. 5, is designed to fit the person and eX- tends nearly or quite to the knees, fitting the waist, about which it is secured by hooks or buttons, as at c. At the top or neck the dress portion Ais plaited to the bodice at back and front, as at d, and the two are also connected at the neck and sleeve holes, so that above the waist the bodice really forms a lining for the dress.
The neck-opening is bound with a cord'D, the ends of which hang down loosely, so that it may be crossed around the body and looped under the fold A to give the fold the appearance of having been made by the loop in the cord, as in Fig. l. This completes the garment after it is on the person, unless sleeves are to be used, when these are made by rectangular strips E, which are attached each at one corner to the shoulder at f just above a sleeve-hole, so that it hangs down over the arms of the wearer or back of or in front of them, as desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As an improved article of manufacture, a dress consisting of a bodice C, adapted to t the person, the part A, secured together and attached at its upper edge to the neck of the bodice and by a curved line of stitches to the lower part thereof, as at a, thereby forming a fold A', and a cord D, surrounding and secured to the neck part and adapted to be crossed in front and then behind, and thence carried forward and tied beneath the fold and on which the fold rests, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
MARY KATE STAAB.
