Description

' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PAUL E. GREEN, OF GEORGETOWN, COLORADO.
ADVERTISING-BOARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 484,194, dated October 11, 1892.
Application filed December 8, 1891- Serial No. 414,429. (N 0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, PAUL E. GREEN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Georgetown, in the county of Clear Creek and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising- Boards; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in advertising-boards; and the object of the improvement is to provide a device of the class stated in which suitable type-blocks forming any desirable advertising matter may be set up and locked at will, said blocks, however, being removable at pleasure for the purpose of changing the advertising matter of the board. Hence the invention relates to a special construction of type-blocks, as well as to the board, case, or frame for supporting or holding the same, the improvement being of simple and economical construction, thoroughly practicable, reliable, durable, and ef ficient in use.
To these ends the invention consists of the features hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings is illustrated an embodiment of myimproved device.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a top or plan view of the improvement. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the device. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken through the boardjfrom the top to the bottom. Fig. 4 is a detail view of one of the type blocks or sections of the board. Fig. 5 illustrates the locking-rod.
As shown in the drawings, the framework of the device consists of a rectangular open case 5, centrally divided by a partition 6, forming a double receptacle for the type-blocks 7. To one side of the device, whichI will term the top,are secured rings, by means ofwhich the case maybesuspended and the mattersetup on both sides exhibited or exposed to view. The sides of the case consist of a double flange or rim of any suitable depth, preferably equal to the thickness of the type blocks or sections employed in connection therewith. One side of this flange-the top or bottom (as shown in the drawings the top)is preferably provided with a fixed or stationary tongue 9, adapted to engage or enter a correspondiugly-shaped recess or groove 10, formed in the type-blocks. Hence the Work of setting up advertising matter must be commenced at the side provided with the stationary tongues. The first row of blocks having been placed in position,
a locking-rod 12 is run through openings 13,
formed in two opposite sides of the flange, said openings being so located that the rods when in position shall fit nicely in the recesses or grooves 10 of the sections 7. The rods and sections are of such relative construction that the grooves 10 of the blocks on one side shall receive one half of the lockingrod, the other half of the rod forming the tongue to engage the recesses or grooves of the next set or row of blocks, and so on in succession from the top to the bottom of the board or until the required matter is set up, each successive rod inserted looking a row of type blocks or sections in place. The blocks may be made of different sizes, as shown in Fig. 1. For instance, the apertures in the flanges for the locking-rods are formed close enough together to accommodate the smallest-sized blocks which it is desired to use. The larger blocks will then be constructed of such size as to exactly occupy the space of two or more of the smaller blocks. Hence when the larger blocks are employed one or more locking-rods will be omitted, depending on the size of the blocks employed. The larger blocks are of the same construction as the smaller in every respect except as to size and are retained or locked in position in the same manner. The locking-rods have heads on one extremity and are provided at the opposite extremity with any suitable retaining means. As shown in the drawings, the rods are angular near the head to fit an opening of corresponding shape in the flange, while the opposite extremity is threaded to receive a suitable nut. The object of the angular portion of the rod is to prevent the same from turning when screwing on the nut. The rods may, however, be secured in position in any other suitable manner.
As shown in the drawings, the device is double, or composed of two sides substantially alike. A single device or casehaving but one flange may of course be employed, if desired.
It Will thus be seen that my improved device affords a handy, convenient, and attractive means for advertising any business of such a nature as to require a frequent change in the matter exhibited.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim is 1. The combination, in a sectional advertising-board, of recessed or grooved typeblocks, a supporting-frame therefor, and locking-rods for holding the type-blocks in place in the frame, which is provided With apertures for the reception of these rods, which engage the recesses in the blocks, substantially as described.
2. In an advertising-board, the combination In testimony whereof I affix my signature in 30 presence of two Witnesses.
