Description

(No Model.)
Jj. MLBARNHART. FRUIT CAN OR JAR;
No. 483,415. Patented Sept.27, 1892.
wumtoz 0%70 mifizri UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN M. BARNHART, OF MARSHFIELD, PENNSYLVANIA.
FRUIT CAN OR JAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 483,415, dated September 2'7, 1892.
Application filed May 31, 1892 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. BARNHART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marshfield, in the county of Tioga and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and usedetail View in perspective of the clamp for holding on the cover of the can or jar.
The present invention has for its object to provide a fruit can or jar with means for securely holding the cover thereon and prevent any air from entering the can or jar after the cover is in place; and it consists in the details of construction substantially as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents a jar, of glass or other suitable material, having around its mouth or opening upon its exterior a shoulder a, with grooves b, the purpose of Which will be hereinafter described. The interior of the mouth of the jar has a circumferential flange c, and extending outward from this flange is a corrugated seat d for a packing-ring B, as shown more clearly in Fig. 3. The cover C has a downwardlyextending circumferential flange e, which has a corrugated face to correspond with that of the seat d, and between these two corrugated surfaces is held the packing-ring above described. The cover G upon its edge has a circumferential groove f, and above this groove $erial No. 435,020. (No model.)
the edge of the cover has depressions g, as shown in Fig. 1. The spider-clamp D is formed of metal and has a central screw-hole to receive a thumb-screw h, said clamp consisting of the radial and horizontal arms '5 and downwardly-extending clutches 7c,which terminate at their extremities in claws Z, and upon the inner sides of the clutches above the claws are spurs m. The clutches 70 pass under the shoulder a, and the spurs m engage with the groove f of the cover 0, and when in this position the thumb-screw is turnedin the proper direction to force the cover down tightly in place over the mouth of the jar. When it is desired to remove the cover, the screw is turned in the opposite direction and the clamp turned to bring the clutches It on line with the grooves 12, when the claws Z will be disengaged with the shoulder a, which enables the cover to be removed. To disengage the clamp from the cover, the clamp is turned to bring the spurs mon line with the depressions g, when it can be removed.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A fruit can or jar having the usual shoulder er and provided with a corrugated seat, as shown, and the upwardly-extending flange c, in combination with i the cover 0, provided with flange e, and corresponding corrugations to those of the seat and having the groove f and depressions g, the clamp D, and screw it, said clamp having claws l and spurs on, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN 'M. BARNHART.
Witnesses:
R. M. SMITH, LOUISA SMITH.
