C L EV l S SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 483,221, dated September 2'7, 1892. Application filed Augu t 13, 1891. Serial No. 402,581. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, MARSHALL E. HUNT and FREDRICK WILHELM LERCH, citizens of the United States, residing at Davenport, in the county of Scott and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Clevis, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in a clevis, in which such clevis is provided with rigid arms having end apertures and an illdependent pin; and the objects of our improvements are, first, to pivotally connect to the outside of one of the rigid arms a spring-arm adapted to be turned on its pivot to engage the head of the clevis-pin and through its spring-power bear against the head of the pin in line of such pin; second, to provide a semicular depression substantially in the center of the top of such pinhead and a semicircular projection in the bottom surface of such spring-arm, adapted to enter in the depression in such pin-head and bear against the same to prevent such springarm from being accidentally disengaged from said pin-head; third, to provide a cap within which the spring-arm is located, one end be ing rigidly secured therein, the cap pivotally connected with the outside of one of the rigid arms adapted to be turned on its pivot, so as to bring said spring-arm in engagement with the clevis-pin and to cover such spring-arm and pin-head when in engagement, and thereby guard the spring-arm from accidental injury or displacement and from exposure to the weather, and, fourth, to provide one of the rigid arms with a rigid hook and the cap with a tongue and stop arranged so the tongue and stop are brought in engagement with the hook only when the cap is turned upon its pivot to bring the spring-arm in engagementwith the clevis-pin, thereby preventing the spring-arm when engaged with the clevis-pin from being disengaged by reason of the opposite end of such clevis-pin accidentally striking an obstruction and also limiting the turning of the cap upon its pivot. We attain these objects by the :mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of the clevis, a portion of the rigid arms, and the pin, cap, and spring-arm shown in section. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of the clevis. Fig. 3 is a view of alongitudinal section of the cap and springarm, showing the tongue and stop on the cap; and Fig. at is an inverted plan view of the cap and spring-arm.

A is the yoke of the clevis, B B the rigid arms, and I) b the end apertures through such arms. 10 is an enlarged part of one of such apertures.
11 is the clevis-pin, 12 its head or enlarged portion, and 13 is a semicircular depression in the head of such pin.
At the outer end of one of the rigid arms B is an inward-projecting hook 14.
The cap 15 has its lower surface cut out, as at 16, so as to leave a chamber therein terminating at one end in a shallow groove or channel, as at 17, for seating an end of the springarm, as hereinafter described, and near the end of such cap is a vertical perforation 18, passing through such groove or channel for the accommodation of a pivot or rivet, as hereinafter described. At the opposite end of said cap is a thin horizontal tongue 19, extended partially around such edge of the cap and terminating in a projection or stop 20. The tongue is adapted to pass under the hook 14 and the projection or stop to come in contact with a side of such hook when the cap is in position to bring the engaging surface on the spring-arm in contact with the engaging surface on the clevis-pin head, as will be hereinafter explained. The spring-arm 21 has at one end a perforation 22, which end is adapted to fit snugly into the groove or channel 17 of the cap, so as to prevent lateral movement of such part, and when so fitted its perforation 22 registers with the perforation 18 in said cap, and the free end of the springarm enters or may enter the chamber 16 of the cap, and upon the bottom or lower surface of the free end of such spring-arm is a semicircular projection 23, adapted and arranged to register with the semicircular depression 13 in the clevis-pin head, as will hereinafter be explained. A rivet or pivot 24 is passed through the aperture 22 in the springarm 21 and aperture 18 in the cap, when such spring-arm is secured in position in said cap so the apertures of both register, as hereinbefore explained, and such rivet or pivot secured in the outside of one of the rigid arms B of the clevis in such manner, so that the cap will turn upon such rivet or pivot, and bring the engaging surface of the spring-arm 1n contact with the engaging surface on the clevis-pin head, and also in such manner that when such engagement is effected the tongue I0 19 of the cap will occupy a position under the hook 14 of such rigid arm B of the clevis, and the stop or projection 20 of said cap be 1n contact with a side of said hook 14. It will be seen that the pivot 24 may be con- 15 structed integral with the arm B of said clevis, and after adjusting the spring-arm and cap 1n p0s1t10n they may be passed over such plvot so the latter extends through their apertures, and the outer end of such pivot riv- 2o eted or otherwise arranged to hold the cap and spring-arm in position and yet permit the cap to turn upon such pivot. It will also be seen that without departing from the scope of our invention the top of the clevis- 25 p1n head may be provided with a semicircular projection, and the spring-arm with a semlciroular depression, and it is also ob- VIOUS that other changes and modifications may be made without departing from the 0 scope of our invention.

We are aware that in aclevis provided with r1g1d arms having end apertures and an independent pin it is old to provide a rigid 5o spring on the outside of one of its arms, be-
neath which a cam-flange attached to the head of such pin is arranged to pass to secure such pin in the clevis. That it is also old in such form of clevis to pivotally attach an arm or 5 5 latch on the outside of one of its arms adapted If the operator desires to insert the clevisto be turned on its pivot, so as to be brought in engagement with a depression in the side of the head of the clevis-pin, and to provide a spring bearing upon said pivoted arm or latch to hold the same in position to engage with said clevis-pin, and that it is also old in such form of clevis to provide in one of the arms a longitudinal recess in which is a spring secured at one end, its free end adapted to engage in a notch in the side of the clevis-pin. We therefore do not claim such a combination or combinations, broadly; but
What we do claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a clevis having a bow with rigid arms extending therefrom, with openings near the ends thereof and an independent pin adapted to be engaged in said openings, the combination of the cap and fiat spring within such cap, both pivoted to the top of one of said rigid arms, such cap and spring adapted to be turned together on such pivot, the free end of such spring provided on its under surface with a projection, the top of the opening in said rigid arm enlarged, the head of said independent pin enlarged to engage said enlarged opening, and such head provided with a depression adapted to engage the projection on the under surface of said spring, substantially as described.
2. In .a clevis having a bow with rigid arms extending therefrom, with openings near the ends thereof and an independent pin adapted to be engaged in said openings, the combination of the cap and flat spring within said cap, both pivoted to the top of one of said rigid arms, such cap and spring adapted to be turned together on such pivot, the free end of such spring provided on its under surface with a projection, the top of the opening in 9;: said rigid arm enlarged, the hook at the end of such rigid arm, the tongue and stop at the free end of said cap adapted to engage said hook, the head of said independent pin e11- larged and adapted to engage the enlarged part of the opening in said rigid arm, and such head provided with a depression adapted to engage the projection on the under surface of said spring, all for the purposes set forth, and substantially as described.
