OLMSTEAD COLLINS, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF THREE-FOURTHS TO JOSEPH KALTENBACH, OF SAME PLACE, AND CHARLES E. HAYDON,
OF TEXARKANA, ARKANSAS.
AXLE-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 483,045, dated September 20, 1892.
Application filed April 30, 1892. Serial No. 431,370- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OLMSTEAD COLLINS, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Journal-Bearings for Railway- Cars, of which the followingisafull, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in journal-bearings for railway-cars, the object being to reduce the friction and wear; and myinveution consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
FigureI is a side elevation of a truck, part in section and illustrative of my invention. Fig. 11 is a detail section taken on line H II, Fig. I. Fig. 111 is part in top view and part in horizontal section 7 taken on line III III,-
Fig. I.
' Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the frame, and 2 the pedestals, which may be of any desired construction.
3 represents the wheels, and 4 the axles, of the truck.
5 represents the truck-frame, and 6 the springs located between the truck-frame and I the frame 1.
3o 7 represents the journal-boxes, to which the frame 5 is secured and within which the journals of the axles fit. Each axle-box has an upwardly-extending housing 9, in which a friction-roller 10 is journaled on pintles or arbors 11, which have bearing in the walls of the housing 9. The housing is covered by a cap 12. The friction-rollers 10 bear on the journals 13 of the axles, as shown clearly in Fig. II.
14 represents the brasses, which are cut out, as shown at Fig.1, to permit the friction-rollers to bear upon the journals, the brasses holding the journals centrally in the journallooxes. The rollers 10 carry the weight of the car on the journals 13, reducing the friction and wear of the parts.
I claim as my invention- The combination, in a journal-bearing for railway-cars, of the axle-boxes having upwardly-extending housings, friction-rollers journaled in said housings andbearing on the journals of the car-axles, and the recessed brasses 14, supported above the journals and permitting the rollers to bear upon the journals and holding the journals vertically beneath the rollers, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
