PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM A. DUTTON, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
CAR-TRUCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 469,011, dated February 16, 1892.
Application filed October 26, 1891.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that- I, WILLIAM A. DUTTON, a citizen of the United Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Trucks, of which the fol-' lowing is a specification.
This invention relates to trucks for streetcars; and it consists in the peculiar construction and adaptation of the car journal-boxes with the side bars, substantially as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
III the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of one end of a side bar and ajournal-box combined. Fig. 2 is atop or plan View of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the journal-box on line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
- Fig. at is a detached View of the lower part of journal-box.
A, from point a to a on Figs. 1 and 2, is a malleable-iron casting containing the upper part of the journal-box b and also having seats 0 c for the springs O C and holes for the springbolts 0 0 In each end of the said casting are provided side recesses, into which bars D D are securely fastened by rivets (Z d. The bars D are those which connect two of the castings A, comprising the two side journalbearings for a car-truck. The bars D are for supporting an outer springseat 0 in which a third spring O is provided. The lower part of the journal-box E (seen detached in Fig. 4)
is firmly bolted to the said casting A by bolts 6 e, and it is also provided with a depending flange having a diagonally-recessed portion 6 F F are brace-bars, the lower ends of which are firmly bolted in the said recesses 6 and their upper ends are firmly bolted to the side bars D, thus forming an extra support for the outer springs.
G represents a part of a cross-beam for j oining two side bars of a truck and from which the brake-beams may be suspended.
To the inner ends of the journal-boxes are provided dust-guards consisting of a chamber States, and a resident of Serial No. 409,840. (No model.)
H, formed partly on the upper portion of the journal-boxes and partly on the lower portion. On the axles are provided collars h, which rotate in the said which are placed leather or other suitable flexible disks k bearing against the sides of the chamber and of dirt.
In the lower portions of the journal-boxes may be provided a lubricant and suitable means for conveying the lubricant to the journal. i
I is a corner cap-piece removably attached bybolts in the ears provided for the purpose for the convenience of ingress to the boxes and for putting in the lubricant.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. In car-trucks, a yoke and part of j ournalbox and having seats for springs cast in one piece, in combination with lower portion of journal-box E, adapted to hold a lubricant,- substantially as described.
2. In car-trucks, a yoke and upper part of journal-box having seats for springs cast in one piece and an extension spring-seat 0 in combination with lower portion of journalbox E, substantially as described.
3. In car-trucks, a yoke and upper part of journal-box having dust-guard chamber, the
chambers, on each side of the sides of the collar for closing the space and preventing the-ingress lower part of journal-box also having portion of dust-guard chamber, in combination with axle havingcollar h and flexible disks 72?, adapted to operate substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. In car-trucks, a yoke having part of journal-box and seats for springs cast in one piece, a lower portion of journal-box E, bolted to said upper part, and the brace-barsF F, in combination, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.-
WM. A. DUTTON. Witnesses:
GEO. W. TIBBITTS, E. J AY PINNEY.
