/ll II'V UNITED STATES PATENT CEEriOE y CLARENCE A. BURTON,`OF KANSAS CITY, KANSAS, ASSIGNOR OF TIVO- THIRDS TO LOREN G. ROWELL, OF SAME PLACE, AND ALEXANDER R.
KLEBBAOF sr. Louis, MI'ssOURr.
JOURNAL- BEARING.
SPECIFICATION for'ming part of Letters Patent N o. 487,236, dated November 29, 1892.
Serial No. 420,209 (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE A. BURTON, of Kansas City, in the county of Vyandotte and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in .Journal- Bearings, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in axle or other bearings intended more especially for railways; and my invention consists in certain features of novelty hereinafter described, and pointed I5 out in the claims.
Figure I represents a side elevation of my improved device as applied to railway-trucks. Fig. II is an enlarged vertical section of the same. Fig. III is a vertical section taken on zo line IIIIII, Fig. I. Fig. lV is a detail perspective view showing the outer plate of the boxing. Fig. V is a detail sectional view showing the detached lower portion of the boxing. Fig. VI is a sectional view showing a modification of the lower detached portionV of the boxing.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a rail, showing wheels 2 of a car-truck resting thereon.
3 represents the truck-frame, to which is secured supporting-bars 4, said bars being secured to the journal-boxes 5, as shown at 6.
7 represents a tie-bar secured to the lower ends of the journal-boxes, as shown at 8, in
order to brace the same and keep them in a vertical position.
9 represents a tie-bar secured tothe tops of the journal-boxes, as shown at 10, also to brace the same.
11 represents the main portion of the journal-box, to which is secured a section l2 by means of bolts 13, passing through flanges 14 on the respective portions of said box.
15 represents an axle on which rests two rollers 16, having a shaft 17, on which restsa roller 1S, having a shaft 19.
20 represents blocks, preferably of cast-iron,
having their lower ends resting on the tWo ends of the shaft 19 as shown at 21, said blocks supporting the journal-box 11 by hav- 5o ing the same resting thereon, as shown at 22, said blocks being provided with oil-'chambers 23, into which Oil may be introduced through apertures 24 in the top of thejournal-box, there being'openings 25 in the lower portion of said 55 blocks for permitting lubricating material to pass therefrom `in order to lubricate the shaft 19, the lubricant dropping from said shaft down onto the shaft 17, and from thence to the axle, in order to thoroughly lubricate all 6o the parts.
The lower section l2 of the journal-box, 8o which is secured to the main sect-ion, as heretofore described, is provided with two rollers 34, which bearmagainst the under side of the axle 15, said rollers having shafts 35, having suitable bearings in said section 12, the purpose of said rollers being to prevent friction caused by side-thrusts of the lower portion of the journal-box.
In the modification as shown in Fig. VI the rollers 34 are dispensed with and in their 9o place is inserted bushings 36, having ears 37, by which they are secured to the' journal-box by passing through a section of the same and having Wedges inserted in the openings 33 in the same. In the section 12 are chambers 39, 95 in which the rollers 34: rotate, said chambers being for the reception of oil or lubricant, and as the rollers rotate with the axle 15 the lubricant is thrown 'up onto the same, 'itthusjb'eir'g While in "operation "automaticallylubricated.
40 represents a dust-cap surrounding a portion of the axle at the inner side of the box to prevent dust or other foreign substances from entering said boxing.
I claim as my invention'- l 1. The combination of the boxing 11, having blocks 20 inclosed therein, roller 18, hav-pA ingoil-ohambers, openings into and from saidl oil-chambers, rollers 16,'havin'g a shaft 17,'on'` which the roller 18 rests, an axle 15, ya mov able section 12, and rollers 84,'journaled inl said section, substantially as set forth,'and} for lthe purpose described.
3. The combination of a truok-frame, supporting-rods 4, tie-rods 7 and 9, journal-boxes' 5, to which 'said tie-rods'andfsupportin'g-rods are A oOnn'eted, rollers 18 'and 16 Within said box for supporting the same on an axle, and a face-plate 27 said face-plate and box having U -shaped anges 26 for guiding the shaft 17.? ot'the rollers 16, substantially asset forth, and for the purpose described.
4. The combination of the box 11, having rollers 18 16 therein for Vsupporting the same, shaft 17, connected with rollers 16, shaft 19 of roller 18, blocks 20, resting on said shaft 19 and supporting said box, and a face-plate 27 having dust-flanges 29 and guiding-flange 28, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
5. The Combination of a journal-box, suitable rollers therein for supporting said box, and a face-plate 27, removably seouredto said journal-box, said l*face-plate having openings 31 for the inspection of the linterior offs'aid box, substantially asand for the purpose set forth.
