To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES BARON, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sanitary Pails, of which the following is a'full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to an improvementin sanitary pails, and has for its' object to provide a pail which will be simple, durable, and economic in its construction, and to provide a means whereby the cover of the pail may be removed from the body or held in firm locking engagement therewith.

Another obj ect of the invention is to so construct the cover of the pail that it will consist of two sections, one of which may be termed a ring-section, which is provided with a cushion, it being adapted for use when the pail is to be used as a commode. The other section of the cover may be termed a lid-section and is adapted to close down over the ring-section, and the two sections of the cover are so constructed that they may be used independently, or a locking engagement may be effected between the sections, so that when the cover is carried up from the body of the pail it will be so carried in its entirety.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, in which similar figures and letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a central vertical section through the pail and its cover, the latter being locked to the body of the pail and the section being taken practically on the line 1 1 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a section similar to that shown in Fig. 1, but taken at right angles to the said section upon the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan viewof the pail and its cover, the lidsection of the cover being open, illustrating the ring or cushion section in place. Fig. t is a plan viewof the body portion of the pail. Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the cover removed from the body of the pail, showing the two sections of the cover connected; and Fig. 6 is a partial vertical section taken through the body and the cover and illustrating the manner in which these two parts are locked by the bail to the body.

The body A of the pail may be of any desired or approved shape, and at one side the body is provided with an exterior socket 10 and with a bail 11, which bail is provided centrally with a friction-roller 11 the said roller being held to turn between two guidesleeves 12.

The main feature of the invention lies in the construction of the cover B. This cover is made in two sections, a lid-section 13 and a ring or seat section 14.. The ring or' seat section, as its name denotes, is circular and of ring-like construction and usually consists of a piece of metal so manipulated as to form a body-section 15, the said body-section being provided with a concaved upper face 16 and a convexed under face, and integral with the body portion 15 of the ring or seat section of the cover an outer horizontally-located flange 17 is formed, and this flange has usually attached to its under face a gasket or washer 18. This gasket or washer is adapted to rest upon the upper marginal surface of the body of the pail, the body portion of the said section being at that time practically within the bail, as is shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

Within the concaved portion of the seatsection of the cover an annular cushion 19 is secured in any suitable or approved manner. This cushion, however, is ordinarily glued or cemented to the metal from which the body of the seat-section of the lid is formed, as is likewise shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and also in Fig. 6. The cushion ordinarily consists of a hollow rubber ring of suitable diameter. The lid-section 13 of the cover is adapted to fold down over the seat-section thereof, and the body portion of the lid-section of the cover is to that end provided with a concaved inner face and a marginal flange, which rests upon the flange of the other section 14.. The flange of the lid-section is provided with a recess 20, as is best shown in Figs. 1 and 5, which when one section of the cover is in looking engagement with the other discloses a portion of the flange of the seatsection of the cover. The lid-section of the cover is provided with a somewhat yokeshaped spring 21, attached to the under face,

and when the lid-section is forced down over the seat-section the members of the spring 21 will engage with the inner face of the seatsection in such a manner as to lock the two sections together; but they may be readily separated by holding the flange of the seat section down at the recess 20 in the lid-section and lifting the lid-section upward. The hinged connection between the cover and the body of the pail is made through the medium of astrap 22, more less curved and hinged to the back of the lid-section of the cover, and this strap is passed down through the keeper or socket 10 of the body; An arched handle 23 is secured to the top or outer face of the lidsection of the cover, and this handle 23 at its upper portion upon its outer face is provided with two connecting concavities or or cam-surfaces 24 and 25, as shown in Figs. 1 and 6, a projection 26 being formed at the rear portion of the rear cam-surface 25.

In operation when the cover is placed upon the body of the pail and it is desired to lock it to said body the bail of the body is carried upward until the friction-roller 11 travels upon the cover-handle 23, and whenthe friction-roller has entered the rear concavity or cam-surface 25 the cover will have been forced down to such a complete lockingengagement with the body as to effectually prevent any odors escaping from the body or any material contained in the body from spilling. In this manner the pail may be safely carried from place to place. When the pail is to be used as a commode, the lid-section of the cover is carried up out of locking engagement with the seat-section and the latter is left in position upon the body, as shown in Fig. 3. When it is desired to empty the contents of the pail, the lid-section of the cover is pressed downward over the seat-section and the two are brought into locking engagement through the medium of the spring 21 and maybe raised together, thus permitting the contents of the pail to be poured out, or the entire cover may be removed from the body of the pail by taking the strap-hinge 22 out of the socket 10.

It is evident that this device is exceedingly simple and economic and that it may be conveniently used in any household.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with the annular trough-like seat-section 15, provided with an external flange 17 to rest upon the upper edge of a pail, and the tubular, annular cushion resting in the concavity of the said section, of the outer or lid section 13, having a horizontal flange resting upon the flange 17, and the spring on the under side of the section 13 and engaging the inner convex margin 16 of the section 15, substantially as set forth.

2. A sanitary pail comprising the body A, having a hinged bail 11 and a socket or loop 10, a sectional cover for the body, swinging at right angles to the bail and having a stationary handle 23 on its upper side, over which the bail swings to lock the cover on the body,

and the strap 22, hinged to the cover and removably entering the said loop or socket, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination, with the body of a pail, of a cover, the said cover being constructed in two sections, a seat-section of ring-like contour and a cushion secured to the same, and a lid-section provided with a spring upon its under face, capable of engaging with the inner surface of the seat-section when the two sections of the cover are brought to an enagement, substantially as shown and described.
