Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
I-IARMON O. FISHER, OF VARWICK, RHODE ISLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING-SADDLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 182, dated November 25, 1837.
To all wwwb it muy concern.-
Beit known that I, HARMON O. FISHER, of Warwick,.in the county of Kent and State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, have invented a new Improvement in Mens and VVoInens Saddles for the Ease and Relief of both Rider and Horse; and I hereby de- Clare that the following is a full and exact. description. i
The nature of my invention consists in providing two spiral springs underneath the saddle-seat and between the saddle-tree and the pad, attached one to each bar of the tree and resting and playing on a plate of sheetiron afxe'd to the pad, which gives elasticity to the saddle for the relief of the rider and horse.
To enable others skilled in the art to make use of my invention, I will proceed to describe itsfconstruction and operation.
I construct Inysaddlesin any of the` known forms; but before I proceed to build upon the tree I bore holes of about one inch diameter through each bar of the tree, as seen in the drawing annexed at A, which holes I cover with sheet-iron on the top of the bars, secur-l ing the iron with rivets B B. In the holes I insert spiral steel springs C from about one and one-fourth to one and one-half inch in length, as the thickness of the bar may require, and to afford sufficient play between the tree and pad. To the pad I affix a piece of sheet-iron E, of sufficient length and breadth to afford a good bearing covered With thin leather, except the part D, which is to receive the spring and upon which it plays. The springs must vary in strength, according to the Weight ofthe rider.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
' The application to mens and womens saddles of spiral springs between the saddletree and the pad, as herein described, using for springs any metal which will produce the intended effect.
