DETACHING HORSES FROM CARRIAGES.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 4,828. dated October 29, 1846.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, H. C. WIATT, of Weldon, in the county of Halifax and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful improvement in swinglet-rees for carriages, &c., for detaching horses from vehicles, thereby preventing injury and damage incurred by the running away of horses, which I denominate the safety-swingletree, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specificationviz., Figures 1 and 2, which are isometrical views.

I make my swingle-tree A (Figs. 1 and 2) of any suitable material, and of a cylindrical or other form adapted to the purpose, on'the top of which near the ends, I insert two pins a a to which are fixed the traces; the traces to be kept from jarring off, by springs 6 Z) confined by bolts or screws to the under side of the swingle-tree. In the center of the swingle-tree is fastened a catch B which receives a spring C situated on the shaft bar D through a slit or opening 0 and is held in its position by a spring key (Z inserted in the slit or opening 9 of the spring C. On the swingle-tree are stays or collars a e fitting sufiiciently loose as to allow it to-turn easily in them; which are firmly secured to the shaft bar by bolts on the top and side. The key is drawn out when occasion requires, by the cord F which is carried up through the bottom, or any other convenient part of the carriage within reach of the driver. i

If the horse, or horses should start; by pulling the cord, the key will be. instantly withdrawn and the force exerted by means of the traces, will cause the swingle-tree to turn and incline the pins in a horizontal direction, as in Fig. 2 which position of the pins allows the traces, to sllp off and free the horse from the carriage.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent consists in The combination of the swingle-tree, springs, catch'and key, arranged and operated substantially in the manner herein described.
