FLOOD-FENCE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 482,460, dated September 13, 1892. Application filed December 18, 1889. Renewed February 18, 1892. Serial 1105422035. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN H. PQULTER, of Arcola, in the county of Douglas and State of Illinois have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flood-Fences, of which the following is a specification.

My invention consists in certain details of construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth and claimed, reference being had to the drawings accompanying and forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device; and Fig. 5.- is a side elevation of a post, showing the manner of connecting the picket-sill therewith.

The heads a a have bars or pickets 1) secured thereto in any desirable manner, and said heads are swung to posts 0 by means of eyebolts g and h, the latter of which passes obliquely through the head, as seen in Fig. 2. Approaches are formed of posts cl and horizontal rails or boards 6, e, and e", suitably secured to the posts. Rails 6 and e extend into the path of the end pickets, so that when the latter rise to an upright position these rails e and c act as a positive stop for the farther swing of the head. The lower edge of the rail 6' also acts as a stop to prevent the pickets from moving farther back than to a horizontal plane. This it does by preventing a too great rise of the head, as seen at the right side of Fig. 1, where a head is shown tilted, as if by the action of water. Each rail 6'', however, is cut away or shortened to permit the swing of the head. A supplemental swinging board is shown at f, the design thereof being to conform to irregularities in the surface of the ground, and a wire rod or brace 71 is anchored and secured to the central or all the posts, if desired, in a manner to prevent upheaving without offering any obstruction to the current or objects contained therein, although the supplemental board and the braces may be omitted, if preferred.

I claim as newand desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a flood-fence, the combination, with the swinging panel comprising a cylindrical head linked to suitable posts or supports and having suitable pickets secured therein, of the adjacent fence-panels having short bottom rails and long upper rails, the latter being extended into the path of the swinging head and of the end pickets of the swinging panel to forma stop for the latter to limit its swinging movement in either direction, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
