Description

(No Model.)
J. TYNAN. BELT.
No. 482,401. Patented Sept. 13, 1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH TYNAN, OF COHOES, NEYV YORK.
BELT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 482,401, dated September 13, 1892.
Application filed June 22, 1892. Serial No. 437,602- (No model.)
.To on whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH TYNAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cohoes, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ladies Belts; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact clescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to theletters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved belt for use by ladies which, among other features to appear, shall be conducive in a great degree to comfort and neatness; and to this end my invention consists in the belt constructed as hereinafter specified.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my belt, and Fig. 2 a sectional View thereof.
Belts as ordinarily made comprise a band that when placed around the waist is of uni form diameter in its vertical extent, or, in other words, is straight up and down. In consequence of this shape an undue pressure is brought at its lower edge upon the hips ot' the wearer, and if the dress consists of a skirt and basque and there is likelihood of these two not properly overlapping the belt will be inefficient to cover the gap possibly occurring between the skirt and the band and the lower edge of the basque. In inventing my belt I have sought to remedy both of these defects, and I accomplish this object by giving to the belt the form shown in the drawings-that is to say, by gradually increasing its diameter downward, so that its shape resembles that of a frustum of a cone instead of the crosssection of a cylinder, as is the form of the ordinary belt. This shape is one that conforms to the figure of the body at the waist, as it extends down over the hips and stomach, resting easily and comfortably upon them and not hearing unduly or disagreeably at any point, as is the case with the lower edge of the common form of belt. My belt is therefore infinitely more comfortable to wear than the form referred to, and, besides, it will be seen that with a skirt and basque it will extend down over the place where the skirtband and the lower edge of the basque should meet and insure the covering of any gap which may exist at this point because of de fective fitting of such parts.
My belt is constructed in one piece A, the two free ends of which are respectively provided with straps a and buckles b or other suitable fastening devices. To prevent the rear 01' back portion from curling up as it would tend to do, I secure midway its free endsa flexible metal piece or strip cl, preferably spring-steel. Such strip d is held in place and connected by a piece 6, stitched to the belt and preferably being of the same material as the latter. made to appear as an ornament to the belt, so that its use for the purpose of holding and covering the metal strip (1 need not detract from, but, indeed, can be made to enhance, the appearance of the belt. Besides being useful in the particulars above pointed out, my belt is neat and tasty in appearance.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an improved article of manufacture, a belt for the waist formed of a single piece of material having a downward and outward inclination to conform to the shape of the body at the waist, with its ends provided with securing means, a vertically-disposed stiffeningpiece at the rear of the belt, and a similarlydisposed piece secured to the belt over said stiffening-piece, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
J OSEPH TYNAN. Witnesses:
DAVID WILLIAMS, SAMUEL J. BENSON.
